I've an original Mac Pro and have been running two monitors off it
very cheerily. Now I want a third and I understand that I need to buy
a graphics card but after that I appear to be confused.
Because I've bought the new monitor (it's a very nice Acer 23in; I
think I may even prefer it to my ancient Apple Cinema Display and it's
certainly much better than my Cibox) and I can't get all three to work
at the same time. Presumably it's my graphics card and/or the socket
I've put it in. The card is a PNY NVidia GeForce 210, chosen
especially for its cheapness-since-I-know-no-better.
The Expansion Slot Utility sees it and tells me it's running at below
maximum speed: the card is a x16 and the original Mac Pro has only one
x16 slot. But I believed, and the Utility suggests, that the card may
run successfully enough at 8x. No sign yet. Plus, System Profiler
spots the card correctly under the Graphics/Displays option (but only
the card, it doesn't recognise that a display is attached) yet under
the PCI Cards bit it just says "There was an error while gathering PCI
card information".
I've tried the new card in slots 2 and 4; my next move when I can is
to try it in slot 1 and the Mac Pro's own original graphics card in
one of the others.
But I have no confidence, no real idea what I'm doing and so far no
trio of monitors.
Sorry for the long "previously on William's monitors" but might anyone
have an idea what I should do? Or perhaps where I could look? I've
read through the Apple Support site without a lot of luck or
understanding so far.
Thanks for any advice you can suggest,
William
