Dear Lydia,
Where do your dive instructors mainly operate?
It would be useful to have specific locations, as we’ve been doing Reef Check in the Maldives since 2005 in collaboration with MRC, mainly around central atoll reefs. Drupella haven’t necessarily been an overt problem in the reefs we’ve visited, but they are common.
Best wishes,
Jean-Luc

Dear all,
I visited a reef in central Lhaviyani earlier today and discovered that most of the Acroporas were dead, and a large number of Drupellas nearby surviving corals and clustered around dead clams! I cannot be sure whether the Drupellas were responsible for all the damage, and have not visited the site for over 18 months, but I was rather shocked to see so much dead coral at this site which I have visited over a period of 5-6 years. I have noticed Drupellas in large numbers at other sites, particularly in Ari atoll. Is anyone at the MRC co-ordinating information on this issue?

We record drupella from almost every dive site we visit in the Maldives, however, they tend to be at limited densities, and don’t appear to be affecting the coral population as a whole where we’ve visited in the past – only isolated colonies.
Our more recent Reefcheck reports are carried out on board Carpe Diem in collaboration with MRC and Biosphere. The reports are here:

click on the links to the 2011 and 2012 Maldives reports. A 2013 report should be done before September.
