Meeting Notes from 2-3-15:Agenda:
Introductions
Route planning for march (stops, targets)
Committees - develop list of responsibilities
Introductions - spent 5 minutes talking to someone new
Route planning - part of logistics committee. Are we going to have stops?
In
previous years there were no stops, walk-by street theater,
messaging/flyering points to catch people as they march, because
stopping presents issues with big marches (people in the back can't
hear/don't know what is going on)
General support for the idea of walk-by messaging - ,short messages, visuals, theater, maybe led by different organizations
Stops
can be effective but sometimes people don't notice that they're
happening, because it's just 10 people breaking off from the march. Last
year there were some powerful ones.
Police don't like stops,
and also they make the fees go up. They don't like us to walk over MAX
tracks, walk with the flow of traffic, try to keep us off of main
streets but we try to get onto them.
We are going to pick
targets, plan for no stops, no breakaways. Reach out to groups with
relevant issues for potential targets with a rough idea of what we'd
like to see and invite them to stage an action at a specific area.
Brainstorm of targets:
$15 Now - City Hall, McDonalds
Homeless Bill of Rights (RtD2?) - City Hall
Black Lives Matter - Justice Center
Immigrant Rights - Justice Center (Go around the block of the Justice Center since it is a jail and police headquarters?)
Banks - identify several on the route and then pick one (PCASC?)
TPP and Fast Track - Oregon Fair Trade, at the Trade Center
Outreach commitments:
Robert - 15 Now & IWW
Romeo/Marco - RtD2
Matteson - Don't Shoot PDX
Crystal - PCASC, AAPRP
Romeo - Enlace
Justin - Oregon Fair Trade
Ask
each organization to take responsibility to organize some
visual/action/event to educate and promote their struggle as the march
goes by.
Also ask each organization if they want to make a
blog post for the may day pdx blog about their issue. If they want to
they can contact
mattes...@gmail.com.
"Save
the date" postcards - is there budget to print? Do we want to do that?
Online save the date? Facebook event? Patricia's image is a great start,
she will bring another draft to the next meeting. Add the date to the
image. May Day, Portland Oregon words are hard to see because they are
only outlines - make them stand out more. Add location (South Park
Blocks - Shemanski Park). Must look good in black and white because our
budget means we often print in black and white. Times - rally at 3,
march at 4:30 (to get more folks as they come off of work).
5 minute meeting in committees.
To Do:
find police liason - Marco for now
everyone reach out to organizations they agreed to about organizing a demonstrations outside the targets
Crystal send out the map from last May with potential targets listed
Crystal reach out to Ash to get Matteson into the FB account to create FB event page
Patricia commits to continuing to work on a poster for next meeting
Next meeting 2/10 at 5:30 at JwJ
