Make sure you give yourself enough time to read "The Open Boat." Here
are a few questions to consider as you read:

What words, phrases, and passages are repeated? Why do you think
Crane repeats these lines? How is each repetition different?

What draws these men together? What defines their brotherhood?

"The Open Boat" refers to "the seven mad gods of the sea" and Fate.
How do you reconcile these references with the ideas in naturalism
that only natural forces affect actions and events?

You don't need to answer each question in your response, but keep
these things in mind as we get ready to talk about the story on
Wednesday.

In reading this passage I have learned that the men are brought
together by the fact that they are facing luife and death and not just
some type of consequence. Crane uses fate in the fact that they are
going to survive because they have lasted so lobng and that if they
were going to die then they would of already died. He uses the fact
that the story is so long to show that the struggle and the amount of
heartship and pain that they are going throughis so great and so long.
I really liked this story but it should very few things and was so
long... Besides thast a great story. -Malone

After reading " The Open Boat" I really liked the story. Crane takes
these hard workers and shows them not to give up. If they keep on and
don't turn back they will ,live.I agree with Malone, that crane use
fate to prove his point. This reading was a long but fun, I enjoyed
reading this short story. If we could have more stories like this one,
i think everyone would enjoy reading the daily readings.

Open Boat goes over many things during the story. Nature has forced
them to abondon ship and work together to survive on sea to reach
land. Teamwork provides them the will to survive and continuously work
together to take turns rowing. Communication from the captian helps
prevent from the crew to fight. Physical and mental toughness helps
the crew to stay alive and not give up. They know they can reach the
beach, they just need to find a way to get past the waves.
