What was your first clue that something strange was going on in "The
Swimmer"? What motivates Neddy to complete his quest? What price
must he pay?

I think the man wants swim a lot. Not sure why he would swim 8 miles
in pools just to get home. The man loves to drink, and he is trying to
hide what he did in the past. But as he swims threw these peoples
pools it reminds he if what he has done in his life. He meets many of
his old friends while he swims through the pool.

I believe that the man has set this goal and is wanting to beat his
quest because he is drunk and also because he is stupid. He has lost
tons of things in his life such as his family, kids, wife and also
time to live his life. It seems that this thing has gone over many
years and he really never notices it.

well basically man doesn't remember anything. so focused on swimming
he lost track of his life.
but even though this man has problems especialy personal problems such
as being an alcoholic that he turns to somehting he can try to forget
or do so he can become successful like swimming. i can't tell if he
uses swimming to run away from his troubles or just swimming to
improve himself in life by trying to prove to others he can be a
better person or to prove to himself he can change

the reader realizes that Neddy has a somewhat obsession to swim and
thats when you catch on. He swims so much that he loses track of time
and everything in his life. im not too sure if he's swimming to forget
the things in this past or the bad habits he has such as drinkiing.
