Hi everyone

Ingrid made the comment: We can certainly provide a space for that kind of data if people wish to supply it.  We're yet to discern what tools ANDS has that might do some magic for us.

Unfortunately, ANDS doesn't have any magic tools for turning text locations into coordinates.  As part of RDA, we do have a tool (as do others on the web) that allows you to select a box by click and drag and the coords of that box are calculated for you and displayed, but it does require someone to do the selecting and doesn't automatically enter the coords into your database.

We haven't yet discussed with Ingrid whether this sort of tool would be useful to the project and if it is how it might be incorporated.

Regards

Robina

Perhaps this is coming soon in the following ANDS project (http://
ands.org.au/funded/eif-fast-start.html):

<snip>
Spatial Information Services Stack Deployment

* Lead institution: AuScope/CSIRO
* Funding allocated: $1007k
* Domain: Cross-discipline (spatial data)

Build on the work undertaken in the SISS project by deploying the SISS
offering at Government data providers with data holdings important to
national research priorities and CSIRO flagships. By developing some
of the component services needed to realise a spatial information data
commons within Australia this activity will assist multiple capability
areas and institutions that have interest in geospatial web service
middleware and clients.
</snip>

Oh and there is the GeoNames API (http://www.geonames.org/export/ws-
overview.html) which may be useful (depending on requirements).
