bug fixes for loading JSON files on windows

Dear registered users:

sorry for sending another mass email. I recently
received a bug report from Julien Pichette (CCed),
regarding a "reading input file is terminated" error
when loading a JSON input file on Windows. This bug
affects the MMC 0.9.0 and the recently released
MCX 0.5.3 and 0.7.9. Only Windows users have this
issue.
