Hey,
Wednesday's meeting was great! We discussed a ton and did some adbusting (look for some interesting advertising around campus...)
Go to this site if you want to do some culture jamming (download the template, recycle those ad-rich magazines, and enjoy):
http://www.thebubbleproject.com/And in less than 2 weeks is the big spring event! Tell everyone to come out on Wednesday April 18th from 445-645p @ Francis Scott Key Hall 0106 for dinner, a movie, and a forum with a special media guest; its titled "Media Matters" and it's free :)
The event is co-sponsored by fellow student group Peace Forum. We're both screening the movie "Independent Media in a Time of War".
If you can fit some casual flyering into your days drop a line too....we should have a ton of flyers soon.
See you next Wednesday.

*THE CATALYST MAGAZINE
Curtis had to reformat his computadora and lost 2 pages in the process
BUT, never fear, he is close to completing the magazine.
He NEEDS, however, some help with research. Email him at bettern...@gmail.com to help with the following topics:
*Global Warming
*Darfur
*Exxon-Mobil
*War Profiteering
To Curtis: here is the list to hit up of those willing to help research
*Jason
*Christian
*James
*Jenna
*VIDEO
Jason has written a script of the first video. The video will be an introduction to our current media system and what the Maryland Media Collective hopes to do.
He needs editing help (Marcel/Catarina?)
Greenbelt Public Access has equipment, but we may need another outlet.
*DISORIENTATION GUIDE
Kickoff meeting was this past Thursday. Aim is to develop an Editorial Collective to format it, publish it, research it, etc AKA make it happen!
In the summer it will start accepting student submissions. Anyone interested in being involved in the editor collective should email Adam at ada...@umd.edu
*MEDIA LITERACY & REFORM
Today we did the Bubble Project. Aim before the year is over is to develop a workshop for other student groups on their media campaign (writing a press release, a directory of contacts, etc)
-------------------------------
2-
The Bubble Project
Go to
http://www.thebubbleproject.com/ for a sweet place to do some bubbling on your own.
We will start doing this each month. We are accomplishing 3 things at once with this project:
1) Recycling ads that will never be used
2) Raising media literacy and awareness on-campus
3) Promoting the Maryland Media Collective!
------------------------------
3- Roadtrip Nation
PBS has independent roadtrip grants for people willing to do 2 interviews on their roadtrip. If they like your content, you recieve a couple hundred dollars. James is spearheading a trip for the summer. Email him at
JamesS...@gmail.com for more info.
To James: here is the list of those interested thus far
*Matt Johnson
*Jason
*Jenna

4- Media Matters Spring Event
Like written above, in less than 2 weeks is our big event!
It is co-sponsored with Peace Forum.
We will screen the half-hour documentary "Independent Media in a Time of War"
AND
have dinner :)
AND
have a public forum on media today with Free Press, the a fantastic national media organization working on advocacy, organizing, and education.
Save the Date! April 18th Francis Scott Key Hall 0106 445-645pm....and its FREE!
---------------------------------
5- Tunnel of Oppression
Help Needed!
There is a Media Oppression room.
The concept is called Spin Alley and will show how the corporate media and government are furthering media oppression through advertiser influence, consolidation, infotainment, journalistic debacles that equate to "state-run media" and more.
Email Christian at
cmm...@gmail.com or the Tunnel crew at
umdt...@gmail.com for more info.
----------------------------------
6- Logo!
We haven't devised one yet and it would be crucial for future flyering and such.
We drew one up that is akin to the IndyMedia "I" symbol but replaces the dot of the "I" with the UMD sphere (the one you click on when you are on a UMD page and want to go to the homepage).
Curtis will graphically design it.
