Hey everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely summer!  Now that Fall is beginning, so is a new semester for the Maryland Media Collective.

Some of us talked over the summer to determine what was done well and what wasn't.  After some time, it was decided that we could potentially do a ton of things under the banner of a free and independent media, but needed also to focus our energies.  Which led to the thinking that the MMC should be a support group for other student groups on-campus.  And so the below outline of the MMC for Fall was developed...

*News Outlet:  That Fresh Radio Piece

To create our own independent media through WMUC FM College Park 88.1 (the campus radio station)

*Guide to UMD and Beyond:  Disorientation Guide

In the spirit of other campuses' efforts to provide more discourse on topics rarely given attention to, as well as provide a guide for whats going on, we are creating a Disorientation Guide

*Online:   Community Media Watchdog/Media Resources/That Fresh Radio Piece/Disorientation Guide

The internet is the most open medium today and virtually everyone on-campus is connected; utilizing this resource allows us to publish That Fresh Radio Piece and the Disorientation Guide online to make it more accessible to all.  But moreso, we can create a forum where the campus community can easily voice their opinions, corrections, and more online about whatever the Diamondback, Washington Post, Gazette, and any other local media have published.  Finally, we can provide more outlets to learning and utilizing more about media.

*Program:  How to Create, Contact, and Utilize Media Workshop (for Student Groups)

SGA requires us to have programming each school year.  An idea was passed around to have the MMC be a service to student groups by advising them in a workshop on how to create their own media, and utilize current media, while being able to attract functioning media.

So that's the concept in a nutshell for the Maryland Media Collective.  Suggestions are ENCOURAGED, but we'll be working with that for now.

We have a new reservation: Margaret Brent Room in the Stamp Union from 615-830 (we won't be there till 830p, but everyone is welcome to use the room until then...we expect meetings to be an hour max like last year...but this time without some out of the way room in Key Hall that has chairs we can't move...)

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 3rd, will be our first meeting.  It will be short (some of us have to attend a mandatory WMUC meeting at 7pm), but please come on out!

The agenda will be:
-review of the MMC concept
-discuss and determine a calendar to pace ourselves
-work on the Disorientation Guide

And finally, speaking about the Disorientation Guide, we plan to have the first issue published by September 19 and 20 for the First Look Fair.  It will be an ideal spot for distribution.  We only plan to have this first issue be a Directory and cover UMD's Cultural, Advocacy, and Community Service groups, with some off-campus groups as well.  James, Adam, and I have been working on it and would LOVE if anyone else can help out.  Just email MD.MediaC...@gmail.com and/or come to the meeting tomorrow.
