Hi all,

We are now registered in the worldwide software freedom day, 19
September 2009!

http://cgi.softwarefreedomday.org/2009/map.shtml

http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams/mossmv

Though we have not yet come up with official activity plan for the
day, this will be one of the most important day for MOSS.

So brainstorm, share ideas and let us come up with an action plan on
how to make this day prolific!

Guys,
I'm planning to visit Kochin, Kerala, India on 25 July 2009. I think
it is a good idea to the management of ILUG on behalf of MOSS. What do
you think? We can discuss about the possibilities of their assistance
in creating awareness here in the Maldives. Probabaly they might some
guys who's willing to come and help us in such similar projects.

In addition, we can talk let them know about our progress and
contribution to our society so far.

Put in your ideas!

I propose we have a weekly meeting. How abt starting next saturday?. I
wonder if any members can provide a conference room. There was a hint
abt that in the general assembly?.

I second that, if the members are below 8, I can help! A coffee shop
can always be the last resort!

I just gave a ring to Rilvan, and he said he will confirm it tonight
if he can get a place for regular meetings on every Saturday!

Will keep you all updated!

Some guidelines to make SFD a positive celebration:

* DO present the capabilities and practical benefits of FOSS.
* DO NOT pretend that FOSS is perfect for everyone or everything.
* DO have the ability to present FOSS ideology clearly and
concisely to interested people.
* DO NOT beat uninterested people over the head with ideology;
this will confuse and intimidate them. Instead...
* DO let the quality of the software speak for itself and its
ideology.
* DO have demo machines present if possible.
* DO your best to connect people with a local FOSS community.
* DO provide contact information for your SFD team so people can
subsequently contact you for more information.
* DO get contact information from interested and willing people,
so you can proactively follow-up with them later.
* DO proactively follow-up with people who attend your SFD event.
* DO find and cooperate with other SFD teams in your area.
* DO start other SFD teams in your area - this is cooperation, not
competition!
* DO NOT -- seriously -- DO NOT bash Microsoft or SCO or any other
false Great Satan. Software Freedom Day is not about any individual
companies or people; Software Freedom Day is a positive community
celebration of Software Freedom.

Team in Zambia, Copperbelt region have arranged various activities to be held during the SFD.

The following are the activities:
1. We shall have an interview with our local Broadcasting to sensitize people about SFD and FLOSS

2. Working in collaboration with CAMARA - Zambia an NGO that distributes computers which are installed with Open office products (LINUX) Edubuntu, UBUNTU to schools. We are going to have a demo on how to install software and how to use software e.g. Openoffice products.

3. We are going to involve students to showcase some of the programs they have made using Scratch (Animation).

4. Distribute software to the local people, schools, companies, institutions.

Here are some quick points Girish (SFD-Indore, India 2006-2009) noted that we may find useful:
" 1. for students:
a. approach educational institutes and arrange simple and maybe informal seminar on FOSS.
b. after seminar, appoint volunteers from among the audience to co-ordinate activities so it does not end up being a one time affair.
c. approach college and school level students differently and as per their specific perspectives.
d. distribute and demo educational material to staff and goodies to students :)

2. for administrative and business people:
a. simply run on-the-face campaign which teases them to probe what SFD is about.
b. explain why SFD is an important event and how adoption of FOSS can make business and administration "easier".
c. invite them along with media to the SFD event

3. for techies,
a. simply suggest them to start thinking about a change of career if they still do not find a global FOSS event interesting. ;-)
b. it is generally better to keep two parts of event, one for technical discussions and other for general activities.

4. for other:
a. relate and arrange SFD with local traditions, customs and situations.
b. relate the SFD event with community practices and celebrations and publicise appropriately.
c. other points may include explaining its global and universal nature, its value beyond being a technical issue and not just another boring seminar.

Lastly, it has been my observation that it is not always the numbers but the quality, effectiveness and continuity of SFD which matters more. I prefer to refer here when in doubt:-  http://catb.org/esr/writings/

Regards and have a great SFD, "

hi all,

I spoke to Zulaal (IT Guy) from UNDP Maldives regarding any help that
can be provided in making the Software Freedom Day 2009 a little more
than just us.

This might be promising as UN already have some free software
movements like

IOSN http://www.iosn.net/ and UNESCO
http://www.unesco.org/cgi-bin/webworld/portal_freesoftware/cgi/page.cgi?d=1

He said he will speak with the respective people and come back to us
on Sunday or Monday.

looks good

recommend including "government" under "By everywhere we mean at Homes,
Offices and Businesses..."

and the sentence "to create more equal access to opportunities through
the use of participatory technologies" under objectives sounds a little
funny to me. might need a rephrase

Hi

This looks cool... As Naail pointed out in the objective I guess we
can change the third point to something like this

3.to create equal access to opportunities through the use of
collaborative technologies

I mean if that is what you really meant by that.

Second, I think this need to be flasher with layout and typesetting.
How about including some graphics?

Hi Vishah,

With reference to the proposal shared, find attached a quick design.

Given the time limit, if this is ok, we have to get this printed as
soon as possible.

Done using InkScape!

hi all,

Trinidad and Tobago Computer Society (http://www.ttcsweb.org/) has compiled a nice oss for win collection cd TTCS OSSWIN CD V1.99d. Check it out at http://www.ttcsweb.org/osswin-cd/index.htm#softwareoncd.

And also i've come across some nice videos about open-source, some would have heard about it. Go-OpenSource.org. http://www.shuttleworthfoundation.org/our-work/past-projects/go-open-source.

Akram,

Well, very few articles in dhivehi have been written about open source
so you can just about write anything. For a start I guess we can start
with the general benefits of it and move on to how the movement works
and go on!

Check the below proposal document created by Vishah for ideas.

Vishah,

Thanks for the update, find below the link for the SFD final proposal
for sponsors and others.

Excellent.

The proposal is very complete and insightful. We could remove the last page and even distribute it as an additional brochure during the event.

Shunan, if you could prepare a letter head, we can proceed with printing the sponsor request and invitation letters on it tomorrow. I'll get back to you early in the morning or by noon. Cheers.

hey everyone, regarding MOSS membership I think it'd be a whole lot more easy if we can roll out application forms for new membership during this big event as students, teachers, volunteers and IT professionals will be visiting this event.
