PIKVM update

I created a second PI-KVM this week using parts we can easily get in Australia

You have to use the PIKVM HDMI-to-USB image. It works fantastic. It's cheaper and quicker to build as you don't have to wait for the HDMI-to-CSI connector from China and the USB splitter from the UK.

I'm going to use this for a few remote computers so I don't have to do long drives.

You can order 1, 3 or 5 units WITH [by choice] a steel case; ordering
with a case incurs extra shipping cost (no cost for the case itself).


I've ordered 5 sets myself.

Shipping and pledge initially cost $USD 685 without the steel case
(which wasn't available then). I had to cancel that pledge and do a
new pledge to get the cases and the new total cost went to $USSD 715

If you've backed the project, check the updates which are only
available to backers.


One of the things covered in the first update was in relation to a
query I raised with them.

Q: “You stated that you could cover the first batch of 300 to 500
units fairly confidently, but you expressed concerns about further
batches beyond the "expectation" of orders. Besides that, the risks
indicated issues with sourcing components; a most significant risk.
(...) I really do want more confidence that supply will not be an
issue and that funds will not be lost when making a pledge.” (the
question citing was approved by the project follower)

Hi Andrew et al,

This is amazing ( for a luddite like me ) . I will get one .

A long time, I had a simple system that detected a failure in a network and proceeded to dial up an internet connection ( when we had landlines then ) and send me an email with an IP address which I can ssh into. The system then presented me with a serial console to the offending machine and I could "fix" the problem. It was crude ( and slow ) , but saved me from having to get into the car and drive..

But that was 2003.. This stuff rekindles my interest, again..

I've already built 6 of the PIKVM's myself and have them working in production. They have fixed many problems already and have saved me many hours in the car driving to clients. I've done a full install of linux remotely also by sending a PIKVM to a client and then performing the install once the client plugged it into their computer.
