Hi everyone,

Our next meeting would normally be on 27th Jan (last Monday of month), but
that's the Australia Day holiday. That could be awkward because
- the venue may be booked out
- people may be away.
So I'm asking whether people would prefer to meet on 20th Jan instead.

Please respond to this email if you think you might come on either of those
dates.
If no-one answers I'll just go for the 26th: if we get 4 names *and* I can book
the venue then it'll be in-person, otherwise it'll be virtual.

I cleared the attendance list the day after the last meeting
so you can put your name down if both dates suit.

No talks scheduled yet - does anyone have something they'd like to talk about?

Cheers ... Duncan.

G'day Duncan,

I think that bringing it forward a week is probably a good idea, but I am happy to side with the majority in this matter.

Hope you are all having a great new year so far.

Duncan - I was tentatively thinking I'd do something on using Windows Services for Linux and getting that working with X11 support for a bit of fun, however I don't think I can do the 20th ...

I've got some notes but my goal of being able to demo that inside a Virtualbox VM running under Linux hit a snag and it just simply refuses allow Windows Virtual Machine Services to run, so it looks like I'll need to blat an actual physical laptop with Windows 10 (gasp!) in order to present that. I was hoping to get that working this weekend ...

I'd be able to do in-person or virtual on the 27th (you mentioned the 26th also, which I was confused about) and in some senses a virtual presentation might work betterer for me as I'll need to drive two laptops with the capture card and OBS so I can show the screen of the other laptop (although I could try and double my money and demonsrate a Linux-to-Windows RDP session I guess)

Regards,
Malcolm

ok Duncan there is no need to toss and turn straight after you have finished counting sheep, I will put my name down ASAP and I will attend.
If you have time available during each day you are online, could you please click onto likes to boost up your points on that website.
Also if you click onto the follow button of 3 different users per day thats and extra 30 points per day (10 points per follow).
You can always unfollow them the next day later if you prefer to and wont be penalized.
And if you click on the generate button anytime around midday each day you can get another 25points per day by doing that, (in the top menu that says create you select in the dropdown menu the generate button) when the generate page loads up check bottom left of screen for a button that says claim 25 points. Once you click the claim button you can exit that generate page without generating anything and not get penalized etc.
The earn points system gets reset every day around 11am but just to be sure login midday.

Hi Duncan, et al,

Hope you all had a great new years!

This coming Tuesday morning I have a tribunal hearing regarding my visa status, and they will decide on whether I can stay in Australia long term, or whether I will be kicked out.

While I wish I could be there, especially to see Windows be mentioned in a MLUG meeting in a positive light! I think it's best I skip this one, and be well rested & sober.

Assuming my hearing goes well, I definitely won't miss February!

@Malcolm, if its still X11 - xrdp is great - https://www.xrdp.org basically windows RDP server for linux. Can use a regular microsoft remote desktop client to log into linux box - hassle free. It doesnt work with wayland though.

Good luck Zak. Hope it turns out well. If you need a referee (outside of your workplace) to vouch for you that you are a model citizen, Duncan is a good candidate.

Duncan - apologies, you may have said earlier but did we get a hint from the venue as to whether we'd be in the main room or the snug? This will determine how much equipment I can usefully bring tonight.

Backing up a step, did we end up having the numbers to meet in-person or will we be doing so virtually? I should have confirmed that up front, apologies.
