LEVERAGING MLT TALENT

An Interview with Richard Barbier (CP '08, MBAP '14)

There is no question that one of the most valuable elements of the MLT experience is the network of ambitious and talented fellows. MLT seminars give fellows the opportunity to connect with one another and build relationships that extend beyond our professional lives and develop into long lasting friendships. Richard Barbier, along with other members of the MBAP'14 class decided to capitalize upon our talented community for a worthy cause: The MLT Giving Campaign. Listen to Richard share his experience working with the very first MLT Talent Show Fundraiser hosted by Stanford University this Summer.

Paying It Forward

We as fellows get so much value out of MLT. In MBA Prep alone we receive GMAT support, unlimited exposure to admissions officers, consultations with coaches, and invaluable advice from MLT alumni. The financial element of the giving campaign helps us ensure the future of MLT as an organization and attract new talent for upcoming classes.  In MBA Prep our efforts to give back rely upon cross cohort collaboration. Cohort representatives for each region come together and merge ideas to create something greater.

Inspiration: MLT Beyond the Grind

The idea for the Talent Show actually originated from an ice breaker at our first MBAP seminar. We were divided into small groups to create and perform brief skits that turned out to be quite innovative and entertaining. Through that exercise, we realized that we were not only among talented leaders, but also among singers, dancers, comedians, and even poets. Our talent show was inspired by the talent we observed in a laid-back setting. We wanted to showcase how our fellows operated outside of the daily grind.

Cohort Collaboration

To make this event possible, cohort representatives from around the country worked together despite the distance to use our resources and plan the talent show for our final seminar. Over 150 people attended the event to see 10 acts of poetry, singing, stand-up comedy and more. Tickets for the event ranged from $8 to $10 dollars at the door and fellows donated items to be used for raffles. Collectively we raised about $2,000 for MLT.

Fundraising for the Future

When leading a campaign within MLT, leverage the talent that is in the room. Be willing to communicate and seek feedback from fellows and listen to the ideas that are out there. The distance among fellows in our community is challenging but the rewards are worthwhile. You would be amazed by the ideas that can come together when you build upon the diverse backgrounds that are only available to MLT.

Richard Barbier is a 2009 graduate of the NYU Stern School of Business. He currently works in the federal consulting sector for T. White Parker Associates. For more information on innovative fundraising ideas for future MLT giving campaigns reach out to Richard at richard...@gmail.com.

I'm in disbelief. Jessica Covarrubius did more by being the only person that could get a Stanford venue for free.

It's just flat out wrong to fabricate where the idea came from on the published newsletter and simplify the work that went into planning that in 3 weeks with performers scattered about the country.

Lesson: b-schools, and those within, are cut throat

We do, but anyone who reads/follows MLT newsletters doesn't know that.

He's the head of the giving campaign that pulled a raffle ticket out for one of the prizes.

This is unbelievable and unfortunate! Aside from knowing that b school is very competitive and cut throat, I believed our MLT family to be better than that. I thought wrong.

Lu, you did an outstanding job organizing the event! Know that YOUR efforts did not go unnoticed!

I have already received an MLT contact to whom I wrote, explaining the real facts behind MLT's First Talent Show and how it came to be hosted by Stanford through the alumni network.

I'd rather there be no recognition for the event than false recognition. It was a blast, 2013 was a blast, and the Cohort 2 fam is timeless!
