  • Third Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Community & Service

On Monday, January 17th, 2011 the Institute for Civic Engagement, the YWCA of Cortland, the YMCA
of Cortland, Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture, the Cortland Free Library, and SUNY
Cortland AmeriCorps have organized activities throughout the day to commemorate the ideals and the
civic spirit of the late civil rights leader, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Between 8 AM and 12 PM, volunteers are welcomed to the Lime Hollow Center for Environment and
Culture, at 338 McLean Rd., to supervise and play with youths at the Day Camp and participate in other
activities in support of their work in the community. From 8AM-6PM, youths can join their friends at the
YMCA's Active Kids program, at 22 Tompkins St., where they will be swimming, climbing and attending
MLK community events to learn more about why we celebrate this special day. Volunteers are also
encouraged to sign up to help supervise at the YMCA. Call the YMCA at 607-756-2893 to register and for
    more information.

From 11:45 AM to 12:15 PM, the YWCA of Cortland hosts their annual free soup and bread luncheon
featuring dozens of homemade soups. The luncheon is followed by SUNY Cortland’s Prof. Samuel
Kelley’s talk on Dr. King and his life’s work, followed by an open question and answer session. The
YWCA has requested some volunteers to aid in set up and clean up before and after the event. Please,
call Stephanie Plude 607-753-4270 before the event to register as a volunteer.

Following the luncheon, a lesson in making friendship bracelets will take place at the Cortland Free
Library, at 1 PM. Materials will be available 12-8PM. Also, starting at 2:30 PM, the annual Community
Conversation on Social Justice will take place at Main Street SUNY Cortland, at 9 Main Street. This year
we will read excerpts from the recently republished Where Do We Go From Here - Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr.'s last book. The discussion will focus on identifying prejudice of all kinds in Cortland and
the resources that are available, and will end with plans for a community project that will aid in making
Cortland a more accepting and welcoming environment for all peoples. All are welcome to attend and
    participate.

Lastly, the community's Remembrance Quilt made last year will be displayed in the Beard Gallery, within
Main Street SUNY Cortland, for the week of January 17th-21st.

For more information on any of the above events or volunteer opportunities, contact Stephanie Plude:
