Unity Tour Concert at the State Theater this Wednesday, March 2nd, at 7:00 PM.
Reduced price or "what you can afford" tickets will be available on the
day of the concert, in the lobby of the State Theatre, beginning at 6PM.
Regular priced tickets ($18) can be purchased online or in person at
the State Theatre box office.
On Wednesday, March 2nd, at 7 PM, Neshama Carlebach, Reverend Roger
Hambrick and the Green Pastures Baptist Church Choir will present a
spiritual journey of soulful music unifying Jewish tradition and African
American song. The concert, produced by Temple Beth El with the
support of many religious and community groups, will take place at the
State Theatre. Through a vibrant melding of musical traditions, this
celebration aims to build bridges among disparate groups in our
community.
Most of the music that Neshama, her band and the choir perform together
is the work of her late father, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, who was a
world-renowned and very prolific singer-songwriter. His deep
spirituality and love of all humanity filled every song he wrote and
touched every person he encountered as he changed the face of Jewish
music. He died suddenly in 1994 and left his daughter to carry on his
musical tradition.
Several years ago, Neshama shared the stage with Reverend Roger Hambrick
and the Green Pastures Baptist Church Choir at a Martin Luther King Day
celebration at her synagogue in the Bronx. There was an immediate
musical affinity which led to their present collaboration and the
recording of their CD, Higher and Higher. While touring together, these
musicians have dedicated themselves to raising awareness of and support
for those suffering the effects of Katrina, and more recently the
earthquake in Haiti, and to spreading a message of unity and hope. Their
common purpose is to help bridge divisions and inspire people of all
backgrounds to work together for healing and transformation in their own
communities and in the wider world.
Temple Beth El has partnered with other religious and community
organizations to bring these artists to Ithaca. Tickets are on sale at
the State Theatre box office for $18, but are also available, for a
donation of your choice, at several other locations. Reduced price
tickets will be on sale beginning at 6 PM, in the lobby of the theater.
