Let me clear up a little confusion about the secure newsgroup feature of
Online-News (which is a new reading option made possible by the list's
new list software, Lyris). This is based on information provided by the
developer of Lyris.

This is not a run of the mill newsgroup, but rather is "secure." Many/most
news readers aren't aware of the concept of "security" with newsgroups.
So those of you who tried an older newsreader probably couldn't read the
Online-News newsgroup.

To read Online-News as a newsgroup, use an application that can deal with
security for readers and posters. The following browsers work:

On Windows: IE3, IE4, Netscape (all versions), Free/Secret Agent.
On the Mac: IE3, IE4, Netscape (all versions), Newswatcher

The best option is to use Netscape 4's news reader, which is the most
sophisticated. According to the Lyris folks: "It alone supports
per-newsgroup passwords (all the other browsers have one password
assigned for the entire server). Also, Netscape 4 alone supports
full-text searching of Newsgroups, even though the standard was jointly
authored by Netscape and Microsoft.

"If you are on several lists on a server, each of your memberships with
different passwords, then Netscape will make the experience much more
pleasant, since it will ask you for a password when appropriate, while
the others will not.

"IE3 on Windows does not support the news:// url type, while IE4 and
Netscape do, and, inexplicably, so does IE3 on Mac."
