Hello,

Does anyone know where one can get info about radar and/or satellite
surveillance, and where one can get cheap/free access to images of this?

I'm working on a story about something that happened in Greenland a couple
of weeks ago. I've approached to obvious commercial sources on site, but
they're data is either classified or it's non-existent because they weren't
monitoring the area.

Thanks in advance.

Take care,
Bjorn

My knowledge of the satellite imaging field is a bit old, but as I
recall ...

the numero uno media person with expertise in the area is a guy by the
name of Mark Brender, who I believe still works as a producer or editor
with ABC News in Washington.

As of a few years ago, satellite images were available from a French
firm called
Spot Image and from the U.S. government's Landsat satellite system
(which was supposedly going to be privatized). I have heard since that
the Russians have started selling images from their surveillance
satellite system, and there was talk that there would soon be other
players in the field -- possibly including China and India.

If you're doing news database searches for information on possible
vendors, you might try the term "remote sensing" along with "satellites"
.. it's the kind of term the industry is more likely to use than
"surveillance."

Brender at one time was active on this issue with the Radio Television
News Directors Association, also in Washington, D.C., and someone there
might have some info on the subject.

You also might try posting your question to the IRL-L list (for
Investigative Reporters and Editors) or the NICAR-L list (for the
National Institute for Computer Assisted Reporting, a IRE unit) ... or
check their web sites, www.ire.org and www.nicar.org. Might find more
folks with expertise in this area in those neighborhoods.

There are definite limits on the frequency with which any of these
systems snap pictures of any particular spot on the globe, as well as
problems with cloud cover and so forth -- so if what you're checking on
was a very transitory phenomenon, it may well be that no useful images
exist.
