A nice feature of the new list software, Lyris, being used now for
Online-News is that it maintains a newsgroup for the list. If you prefer
to participate in the list by reading it as a newsgroup rather than having
messages sent to your e-mail box, here's the address:
news://clio.lyris.net/online-news
This is a secure newsgroup, so non-members cannot post. If you want to read
the newsgroup but still participate in the discussion, you will still need
to be a list member.
To be a list member and not receive e-mail from the list (should you opt for
the newsgroup), change your listing settings to "No Mail." This can be
done by:
1) Visiting the list's Web page:
http://www.planetarynews.com/online-news
2) Log in with your e-mail address -- the one listed at the bottom of this or
any other list message -- and password (if you have one).
3) Click the "Your Settings" button, then change the "Status" field to
"No Mail." Click the Save button at the bottom of the screen.

Simply open a standard Web browser window and go to the URL. It should
launch the browser's news reader and go to the Online-News discussion.
I just tried it using Netscape and it worked for me.

You may not be able to get to this address using America Online unless you
install a separate Web browser that includes newsreading capabilities.
Warning: Outlook Express (bundled with Internet Explorer 4) can read the
group, but it has problems because lyris.net server will not respond to a
request for a current active-groups file. If you click on "Tools/Newsgroups"
you not only won't get a list of groups, you'll lose your subscription to
online-news via NNTP. :-(
