Just going through some of Steve's column and came across the one dealing
with his wishes for 1997. One of his wishes dealt with WebTV and hope for
its success.
I think it is being successful, at least judging by my membership roster.
I haven't done an official count, but I deal with these addresses every
day, so I have a pretty good idea of what ISPs are most popular with
members.
Easily, the leader is AOL. A couple hundred of my members (out of 665) are
on AOL. The next most popular service is WebTV, of course, there's a huge
drop off -- to something like 15, but no other ISP is even in double
digits. (I don't know how healthy Compuserve is, but one reason I probably
don't have a high number of Compuserve members is they have a well
established RV Forum that is quite popular with its members, so they don't
have much use for what I'm doing.)
I'm also seeing an increase in traffic from WebTV, I think, which is one
reason with the site redesign I'm working on I'm dropping the white
background and doing a few other things to hopefully make the site a little
more WebTV friendly.
A word about my demographics: About 60 percent of my members (and 80
percent of my community leaders) are Baby Boomers -- mostly new to RVing
(while most of the older crowd are experienced RVers but new to the Net),
but most of the WebTVers seem to be from the older set. I think WebTV is
very attractive to older people who are a little afraid of computers but
what to see what the Net is all about, especially when at every campground
they go to now, they find other RVers talking about the Net.
I'm wondering if online news sites are seeing more activity from WebTV
users or I'm I seeing it just because I deal with a lot (maybe a higher
precentage than you?) of older computer users?
Will Steve get his wish in 1998?
Best,
H.

Apologies if I am late to respond on this and somebody already did so.
Apparently - WebTV got so much usage - their servers went down over the
holidays, according to some news reports. Also - they sold out in some
places of their box for the holidays. Erol's in located in Washington, DC,
runs extensive media (TV and Radio and Newspaper) here.
