REGARDING A NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE WITH LINK AND EXCERPT BELOW:
Alan sees the internet as a very postive development in
rural America that will help counter its remoteness bringing with it
access to satellite television as well. The internet will provide
particularly helpful services for information starved and isolated
communities such as focused information and data regarding crop planting
and care conditions and access to telemedicine.
There are some very important discussions and links to be
found on the Educational Cyberplayground website regarding the Digital
Divide. The rural internet gap has been one of the major components of
the Digital Divide and education has been one area that has been a serious
Digital Divide problem in rural areas. Here are some important
Cyberplayground links on this issue.

Net Will Lift Rural Life Says Greenspan
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON -- The "great wave of invention and innovation" represented
by the technology boom will benefit not only people living in cities but
in small towns and on farms, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said
Thursday.
Just as electricity and better highways transformed rural America in
the last century, the technological revolution involving computers and the
Internet is certain to have a great impact in the new century, Greenspan
said in a speech to a Kansas City conference on rural America.
"Like all the previous episodes of technical advance, the revolution
in information technology already has improved living conditions in
numerous ways and it will likely bring future benefits to rural
communities that we now can only scarcely imagine," Greenspan said in his
remarks, copies of which were distributed in Washington.

The Dodge Foundation is financing 'A Coaltion for Self Learning' to promote
cooperative lifelong learning communities. That is, learning co-ops,
homeschool clubs, and all programs "designed to increase parental awareness
of alternatives to the current schooling system and to open a broad
discussion of educational options for young people that may potentially
create a more humane society."
The Coaltion is inviting all and any nonschool collaborative learning models
or resource for self learning to participate in this public relations
campaign. Its first project it to mail a press kit of PR flyers to
progressive newsletter, magazines, newspapers, friendly academics and other
outlets that will let the mainstream know what is happening already to
deschool society.
You can participate by sending a camera ready 1 page PR flyer to the address
below. Mailing is planned for mid May. The time is short. If you have a
favorite local learning program that need advertising send your PF flyer
ASAP.

The U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics'
(NCES) Students' Classroom (http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids) is fun and offers
tons of interactive activities:
* The What are Your Chances? game teaches students about probability
by first asking for a number of times to roll the dice, then explaining the
results (via a graph, chart, and straightforward text);
* The Create A Graph feature explains the uses of different types of
graphs, then generates a pie chart, line, or bar graph based on data
selected by the student;
* The Mathematicians are People Too quiz pairs students with a famous
mathematician and illuminates the discoveries of some of history's great
minds;
* The NCES on-line 'zine, CRUNCH (http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/crunch),
is an exciting new educational feature! Students are invited to express
themselves by taking a stand on a (monthly) provocative feature topic
related to education, submit art reviews (plays, movies, books, concerts,
etc.), technical reviews (software, electronics, hardware, etc.), or
creative writing (prose or poetry). They can also try their luck with a
monthly mathematical brain teaser, and read a student-friendly excerpt from
a recent NCES report. Best of all, CRUNCH can encourage students and build
their confidence by providing a public forum for their opinions and writing.
(Note: All submissions are thoroughly reviewed before they are posted by
the Editor, a former English Instructor.) Further, our Word-A-Day (specially
tailored to 8-14 year olds) encourages an enhanced vocabulary.
Come see us soon, at http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids-don't worry, you won't be
