Dear Friends,
This Sunday, April 30, a hundred years ago, Casey Jones crashed his
locomotive into a freight train. Hear the story of Casey Jones this week
on NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday Morning. Taki Telonidis produced the
story and we are quite pleased with it. Our feature airs in the last ten
minutes of hour one of the show which, at some stations, is aired as the
second hour. In other words, it might end the two hour program or might
be the last piece in the first hour of the show.

regards, Hal Cannon, Western Folklife Center Media Office

P.S. Thanks to Steve Green at the Western Folklife Center in Elko, NV
whose idea it was to honor Casey. Also thanks to several archivists who
sent us a boxcar load of Casey Jones recordings including: Amy Davis and
Jeffrey Carroll at the University of North Carolina's Southern Folklife
Collection; Paul Wells and Bruce Nemerov at the Center for Popular Music
in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Jeanette Casey at the Chicago Public
Library's Music Collection; and Art Shifrin, a member of of the
Association for Recorded Sound Collections. Thanks, also to southern
railroad historian Bruce Gurner in Mississippi and to folksong scholar
Norm Cohen in Oregon."

TIME FOR KIDS TO SEND KID REPORTERS
TO PRESIDENTIAL CONVENTIONS
----
Kid Reporters Will File Daily Stories on timeforkids.com;
Will Travel to Convention Armed with Questions from Online Kids
----
"Be a TIME For Kids Convention Reporter" Contest Kicks off Next Week

New York-- In an effort to connect kids to the 2000 presidential
election, TIME For Kids (the classroom division of TIME magazine) and
timeforkids.com (http://www.timeforkids.com, AOL Keyword: TFK) announce a
contest
to find TFK reporters to send to the Republican and Democratic conventions
this summer. The kid reporters will shadow TIME reporters at the
conventions, interview delegates, submit daily journals to appear on
http://www.timeforkids.com and take digital photographs that will be
transmitted
back to the magazine's website.
Of course kids can't vote in the November election. But "Election
Connection 2000," an election-specific mini-site on timeforkids.com, gives
them the opportunity and the tools to make an informed choice by learning
all about the process and this year's big issues. As part of an expansive
relaunch of timeforkids.com, "Election Connection 2000" will multiply its
election features, games, and information tools this summer, including full
coverage of the campaigns, personalized campaign postcards, presidential
speech-makers, and kid-invented bumper stickers and election pins.
timeforkids.com is the only kids election news and information destination
on the Web powered by a major news magazine.
"The goal of 'Election Connection 2000' is to connect kids to the
election in a meaningful way that makes use of their own unique
intelligence, curiosity, and creativity," said Joel Schwartzberg, editor of
timeforkids.com. "Sending kids to the conventions as ambassadors of kids
everywhere is symbolic of the site's ability to empower them with a means to
learn, express themselves and make a difference."
The "Be a TIME For Kids Convention Reporter" contest will be
announced on timeforkids.com on April 3rd and will appear in the April 14
issue of TIME For Kids. The contest is open to every kid, not just TIME For
Kids subscribers. Entrants must be 13 years of age or younger as of July 21,
2000 and need to submit a 500-word statement explaining why they would be
the best reporter for TIME For Kids. They will also need to submit
supporting documentation in the form of an interview transcript, a news
report, a web page or a video clip. Two winners, one for each of the
conventions, will each receive an all-expense-paid round-trip ticket, hotel
lodgings and meals for himself and an adult. Entries must be postmarked by
May 22, 2000. For official rules and regulations, visit Election Connection
2000 at http://www.timeforkids.com (AOL Keyword: TFK) or call toll-free
800-777-8600.

REGARDING A NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE WITH LINK AND EXCERPT BELOW:

Eight movie studios backed by The Motion Picture Association of
America (MPAA) are suing to remove linking to sites that have DVD versions
of films online. The links are pared with availability of DeCSS Software
on the site of the linker that enables, according to MPAA, unauthorized
viewing and piracy of motion pictures by bypassing the security system on
these DVD videos. The defense attorneys argue that the software enables
film viewing on computers that are run on the Linux operating system.
Martin Garbus, a first amendment specialist, will be working on the
defense side on this case.

First Amendment Lawyer Takes on Movie
Studios in DVD Case

Eight major movie studios are asking a federal judge to order a Web
publisher to stop linking to hundreds of sites carrying a piece of
software that they say threatens their industry.

Martin Garbus is determined to stop them.

Garbus, a well-known New York trial lawyer
and First Amendment specialist, was brought on
board recently to assist the Electronic Frontier
Foundation, a cyber-liberties group, and a small
group of volunteer lawyers in their efforts to
wage an important legal battle. In essence, the
case tests the ability of movie studios and other
content providers to use a new federal law to
restrict access to their digital wares.

Next week Garbus plans to submit legal papers arguing that his client,
Eric Corley, one of three defendants in the case, has a perfect right to
link to sites posting a controversial software program called DeCSS.
Corley, under the name Emmanuel Goldstein, runs a print and Web
publication, "2600: The Hacker Quarterly."
