Moving to Plus Trial

Hi there!

We just started using Machine Learning for Kids and we tried out the Smart Classroom lesson. I set up an umanaged class and the API key with the lite program, with of course, the result being that only 5 kids could have their projects working. 

I have upgraded to a pro trial while I try to persuade my Admin to pay for the plus plan! But, we are still getting the message that we have reached our limit on the models. Do I need to reset the API key? Or does it take a while to kick in?

It's a bit of a tangent to your actual question, but I do wonder if this wouldn't be simpler if you'd gone with a managed class.

and, if you're willing to share, I'm curious to know what motivated your decision there.

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to that, sorry. 

I think it'd be worth asking in the Chat feature at https://cloud.ibm.com/unifiedsupport/supportcenter 

They won't be familiar with Machine Learning for Kids, so they'd be more likely to understand the question if you ask something like:

"I've upgraded my instance of Watson Assistant to the Plus Trial plan, but it still seems to be limited to 5 skills. I was expecting it to support up to 50 skills, based on the description in the table in https://cloud.ibm.com/catalog/services/watson-assistant 

What do I need to do to create more than 5 skills?"

Hi Dale!

I'm not the original poster, but I can add my decision-making process if it's of any interest. I tried to run the Make Me Happy activity using Try It Now and my students all ran into a problem (which, sadly, I did not record the text of, as it was in the middle of class and I'd gotten a bit flustered, since my other attempts had worked fine). So I decided to create an account for my class and I went with "unmanaged" because I didn't realize there would a a limit that would only allow 5 text models to be created at a time and it seemed rude to choose "managed" when it appeared I could manage it myself.

If I can recreate the error I got from Machine Learning for Kids using Try It Now, I will let you know what it was.

I'd like to just clarify one thing please

I do not enforce any such limit. 

An unmanaged class account doesn't mean you can only create five text models at a time (and there are in fact thousands of class accounts with many more than five text models).

Unmanaged means you provide your own Watson API keys.

Managed means I sort out the Watson API keys for you.

If you choose to provide your own Watson API keys, this does mean you need to provide enough API keys to meet the needs for your class. And there are free ("Lite") plans available from Watson that can only be used to create five models at once. But that is an attribute of the API key you use, not something that I am enforcing, and not really because you have an unmanaged class account. It's just that IBM Watson has usage limits on it's API keys, and they won't allow you to exceed those limits.

Sorry if this seems like a pedantic point to make, but I didn't want anyone else to stumble onto this post and come away with the impression that there were limits on the number of text models in unmanaged class accounts.

I have been in the situation of providing and supporting educational software that involves multiple products and entities, and confusion in the online discussion can make a developer's life difficult.  So, my apologies that my post muddied the waters there.

I completely understand that the 5 model limit is attached to the Watson API key and is not a policy that has anything to do with Machine Learning for Kids. 

Am I correct that the only option for having more than 5 simultaneous models going. in my classroom is getting a different plan with Watson on IBM's Cloud site? (Or using the Try It Now option instead of following the worksheet instructions?)

Those are two options. The third is to have a managed class account, where the API keys are provided and managed on your behalf.
