Subject: Invitation to Join Data Science Capacity Building for African Universities

I trust you are well. I would like to share a training opportunity on data science & machine learning for students & staff at your institution.

Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) in partnership with four African Universities are working to assess the COVID-19 response in Africa.  Through this collaboration, the project partners have established a community of practice (COP) for Universities in Africa aimed at developing the capacity of African institutions to prepare, analyze and respond to disease epidemics successfully.

As part of the COP, and in partnership with the IBM Research Africa (IBMRA) scientists, who have expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and machine learning, the project has organized a capacity-building opportunity on data science and machine learning. We would like to extend this training opportunity to your institution to participate.

The details of the training are below:

  • Target participants:  The target audience includes participants interested in or with a background in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing. The minimum skills requirement for participants is basic computer skills.
  • Topics/themes: Among the topics that will be covered in this engagement are analyzing the impact of COVID-19 on essential health services using time series analysis; learning from COVID-19 models to support what-if scenario analysis and intervention planning and descriptive statistics to analyze NPIs implemented in African countries
  • Duration and number of participants: The programme runs until October 2022 and there is no limit to the number of participants from your institution/university.
  • Mode of training: The training will be conducted online through Webex with an expected engagement of about 2 hours every week with facilitation in both English and French.

Interested participants can register via this link by 25th May 2022.

Looking forward to your response.

Thank you

Kind Regards

Sibongile Gumede
