I wanted to share an exciting development and new funding opportunity!
Machine learning can help communities around the world understand, mitigate, and adapt to climate change. However, a lack of ground truth data limits the effective use of machine learning in low- and middle-income communities that are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Solutions created by and for those communities are crucial to address the climate crisis globally.
To address this need, a group of philanthropies and data scientists have created Lacuna Fund. The Fund is the world’s first collaborative effort to provide data scientists, researchers, and social entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income contexts globally with the resources they need to produce training and evaluation datasets that address urgent problems in their communities.
Lacuna Fund just launched its most recent call for proposals focused on machine learning datasets for equitable climate outcomes in climate & health. Proposals are due on 17 July. See the full announcement, with more details on eligibility and selection, on the Lacuna Fund Apply page.
