POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW POSITION: Deep Reinforcement Learning for Exploring
Sustainable Agroecological Transition Pathways

DESCRIPTION: The successful candidate will work on Deep Reinforcement
Learning algorithms for discovering alternative sustainable transition pathways in
agroecology for the Brazilian Nordeste landscapes. Two-step selection
open til Sept. 2022 - Notification in December 2022 - Start in early
2023. The expected duration of the position is one to two years with
renewal upon review. In particular, the research will involve
computational models for understanding and making inferences and predictions
about threats to biodiversity and social vulnerabilities so as to (1) propose strategies to foster the development of sustainable agroecological systems combining biodiversity conservation and social inclusion, and (2) provide recommendations for adaptive solutions and governance coping with the biodiversity crisis and climate change at the local and regional scales. The research involves a rich variety of transdiciplinary research issues, such as theory of RL models, explainable AI, eco-informatics, ecological and evolutionary theories on biodiversity structure and dynamics, and socio-ecological concepts and theories.

HOSTING LAB: IRD ESPACE DEV (Montpellier, France) in collaboration with
IMBE Aix-Marseille University (Marseille, France) and Federal University
of Paraíba - Campus IV (Brazil)

INDICATIVE SALARY: Depending on experience: from 1,980 Euros to 2,320
Euros net per month (2 460 Euros to 2 890 Euros gross per month) with
social security benefits and coverage of scientific travel expenses.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in a field related to AI/ML in particular reinforcement learning,
CS or related discipline.
- A strong theoretical background in Machine Learning
- Programming skills including experiences using Python
- Ability to present work clearly both written and orally
- Experiences with deep learning tools are mandatory
- Interest in Agronomy and/or Theoretical and Applied Ecology.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The postdoc will (a) carry out high-quality research and publish the
research results, (b) assist in research supervision and guidance of
graduate and undergraduate students, (c) present research results to
collaborators, (d) participate in research proposal preparation.
