Area of Focus:  Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare and Medicine
Job Openings: Two openings are available: Postdoc and full-time NLP Scientist
Primary Location: This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring 2-3 days per week on University of Colorado, Anschutz campus as needed for in-person meetings. The position is based in Aurora, Colorado.
Start Date: September 1st, 2024. Earliest start in August.

Join Dr. Gao’s lab at the forefront of developing and integrating cutting-edge natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize real-world applications in medicine and health. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a pioneering team at Department of Biomedical Informatics, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The team aims to develop advanced AI solutions to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in healthcare. As a postdoc / NLP Scientist in our lab, you will be instrumental in advancing language technologies that improve the accuracy and efficiency of medical diagnostics and patient care documentation. This position not only allows you to contribute to meaningful and transformative projects but also to grow professionally in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.

Day-to-day, you will be immersed in a variety of exciting projects, such as enhancing and evaluating large language models (LLMs) for diagnostic decision-making, optimizing LLM training for low-resource environments, and assessing model explainability. You'll work closely with a team of graduate students, postdocs, and other collaborators across the nation and the world to develop innovative AI models, create software tools, and establish robust data processing pipelines. Your contributions will directly impact our ongoing efforts to transform healthcare through AI, making this role crucial to the success of our department and the broader university community.

About the University
The University of Colorado (CU), founded in 1876, is a world-class public university system with four campuses across Colorado: CU Boulder, UCCS, CU Denver, and CU Anschutz Medical Campus. The CU Anschutz Medical Campus, located in Aurora, Colorado, hosts six health sciences-related schools and colleges, including the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Nursing, School of Dental Medicine, and the Colorado School of Public Health, along with various graduate programs in biological and biomedical sciences. The campus also includes the 184-acre Fitzsimons Innovation Community, UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, and a residential/retail center named 21 Fitzsimons.

The campus is just a 20-minute drive from downtown Denver, offering easy access to urban amenities and cultural experiences, as well as some of the nation’s best outdoor activities, such as hiking in the Rocky Mountains and skiing in Vail and Aspen. Denver International Airport is the sixth-largest airport in the U.S. and the eighteenth-largest in the world. The Regional Transportation District (RTD) operates the A Line rail service between DIA and Denver Union Station downtown, with trains every 15 minutes, taking about 37 minutes. There is a light rail stop on campus, making the trip to the airport 19 minutes and 18 minutes to Union Station downtown.

In 2022, CU Anschutz Medical Campus received $321.115 million in NIH funding, ranking 17th in the U.S. In 2023, CU Anschutz was ranked 24th globally on the Nature Index 2023 Research Leaders in Health Sciences.
