Dear Colleagues and Humor enthusiasts,

We are pleased to invite you to submit your latest research to the LaugHSMI (Laughter, Humour, Smiles in Multimodal Interactions) workshop, taking place October 9th, 2026, in conjunction with the ACM International Conference of Multimodal Interactions (ICMI).

LaugHSMI is dedicated to advancing our understanding of the role of laughter, smiles, and humor in human-computer interaction and multimodal communication. These phenomena are fundamental to social bonding and conversation regulation, yet they remain computationally challenging to detect, interpret, and generate.

We welcome interdisciplinary contributions from fields such as affective computing, NLP, computer vision, speech processing, and social signal processing.

Topics of Interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Detection & Analysis: Automatic detection, acoustic/visual features, cross-cultural variations…

  • Understanding & Modeling: Computational models of humor, theory-based models, multimodal fusion, transformer-based approaches, ethical considerations...

  • Applications: Human-robot interaction, human-agent interaction, affective dialogue systems, social robotics…

  • Datasets & Evaluation: New corpora, annotation schemes...

Submission Guidelines:

  • Format: Double-blind review. Short papers (4 pages) and Full papers (8 pages), excluding references, following the ACM ICMI format.

  • Scope: We welcome full research papers, work-in-progress, position papers, and summaries of works published within the last 12 months.

  • Submission Platform: OpenReview

Important Dates (AoE):

  • Submission Deadline: July 1st, 2026

  • Notification: July 22nd, 2026

  • Camera-ready: August 1st, 2026

  • Workshop: October 9th, 2026

For more details on the submission process and further information, please visit our website: https://laughsmi.github.io/
