Hi everyone,

This semester, I’m co-organizing the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) MARL talks with fellow UMD CS PhD student Ryan Sullivan. Participants interested can join our Reading Group, by filling up the Google form on our website https://sites.google.com/view/university-of-maryland-marl/home.

Our talks resume on the week of Thursday 2/23 after major AI conference deadlines from end January to mid February.

Please fill out the when2meet with your preferred time (continuous 1 hour time slot) before Monday February 6, 2023. We will share the talk timings with you on Tuesday February 7, 2023. https://www.when2meet.com/?18407334-6a1qW

Previous speakers include Dr. John Langford from Microsoft Research, NYC; Dr. Stephen McAleer and Brandon Trabucco from Carnegie Mellon University, Kai Wang from Harvard University, Dr. Chi Jin from Princeton University, Dr. Robert Loftin from TU Delft (formerly at Microsoft Research), Dr. Branislav Kveton from Amazon AWS AI Labs, Dr. Marc Lanctot from Google DeepMind, Dr. Thodoris Lykouris from MIT and Dr. Eugene Vinitsky from Apple/NYU/UC Berkeley.

Participants may be fascinated in several aspects of MARL as it opens a new door of intelligence in decision making with multiple agents unlike the cognition focused intelligence of NLP and CV among others. The real world applications are immense (4 of them being; MARL for international diplomacy https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.05492; MARL for nuclear fusion! https://www.cmu.edu/news/stories/archives/2022/september/char-nuclear-fusion.html; MARL for chip design https://www.deepmind.com/blog/accelerating-fusion-science-through-learned-plasma-control; MARL for self driving cars https://arstechnica.com/cars/2016/02/excited-for-self-driving-cars-youve-got-gran-turismo-to-thank/) and the list goes on :) The foundational theory backing up these real world applications is also super interesting and intuitive covering a range of CS/AI/RL/MARL/Engineering/Economics concepts.

Looking forward to the Spring semester sessions of MARL Group. :)

Best Regards,
Saptarashmi
