Closing Date: Sunday 31 August 2014
Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton is offering a fully-funded PhD CASE conversion studentship to start October 2014. CASE studentships are a collaboration between academia and industry.
The research topic is online advertising, and the research will be performed in collaboration with Crimtan, an advertising company that has developed its own bidding platform and manages the advertising campaigns on behalf of many large customers. Although the student will be based at the university, it is expected that the student will spend some of his/her time at the company.
The goal of the research project is to develop real-time bidding strategies for online auctions, taking into account the likelihood the value of the user for the advertising, as well as other factors such as the advertiser’s budget and/or a target number of impressions. In order to bid effectively, techniques need to be developed to derive the distribution of future auction prices and accurately predict future supply of impressions for specific campaigns. Machine learning techniques will be applied and developed to produce these predictions. The algorithms that are going to be developed need to be able to operate in a real time environment, and so need to be computationally efficient. The effectiveness of the algorithms will be evaluated using real data from the ad exchanges supplied by Crimtan.
In addition to the main goal of the project, depending on the interests of the student, the research could be extended to include the analysis of user profiles to predict the conversion rate and/or theoretical analysis of ad auction exchanges through the application of game theory.
The candidate is expected to have a basic background in machine learning through taught modules and have a general interest in online auctions.
Eligibility: the student is required to have an upper-second degree or better. In addition, the student needs to be DTA eligible. For EU nationals, this means you need to have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years. For non-EU, additional restrictions apply. Please see
