PhD Position in Machine Learning at HU Berlin
-------------------------------------------------

PhD position in Statistical Machine Learning
at the Machine Learning Group,
Department of Computer Science,
Humboldt University of BERLIN

*Deadline: 15th Jan, 2017*

The ML group at HU Berlin is recruiting a highly-motivated
doctoral researcher.

HU Berlin is one of the eleven German Excellence Research
Universities within the Excellence Initiative of the German
Federal Government. The university has educated 29 nobel
prize winners and is considered one of the most prestigious
universities in Europe.

The machine learning group at HU Berlin,
https://www2.informatik.hu-berlin.de/~kloftmar/,
develops theoretically grounded statistical machine learning
methods for analysis of large amounts of data. The group has
developed effective learning methods and statistical learning
theory for integrating the information from multiple sensor
types (multiple kernel learning) or multiple learning tasks
(multi-task learning) as well as anomaly detection. The group
has successfully applied these methods in various application
domains, including network intrusion detection, visual image
recognition, computational biology, and agriculture. A recent
interest of the group is also on large-scale Bayesian methods
for statistical genetics.

The candidates are expected to conduct basic machine
learning research and contribute to ongoing projects.
Successful candidates can be given the opportunity
to co-advise undergraduate and M.Sc. students and
work with PhD students and Postdocs.
Candidates are expected to contribute by basic ML
research to one of the groups focus, e.g., on
extreme multi-class classification.
Collaboration with the ML group at TU Berlin,
https://www.ml.tu-berlin.de/menue/members/,
is also potentially possible.

Applications shall include a signed cover/motivation
letter mentioning the job ad number "DR/131/16", a CV,
supporting letters or references, a link or pdf of the BSc
MSc thesis, evidence for mathematical skills (e.g., grades,
mathematical thesis, etc.), and - ideally - a research
statement.
Positions can be initially given with a contract duration of
up to 24 months, but with option of prolongation
for at least 12 months.
Payment will be according to the competitive German
TVL E-13 payment scheme, depending on the candidate's
experience and qualifications.

Applications are submitted by email to
kl...@hu-berlin.de
using subject
'Application for the Postdoc Position DR/131/16'.
Official deadline (not strictly enforced) for application
is Jan 15th (i.e., screening will start then).
If you have good reasons for extension, please contact me
directly.

Applicants are cordially invited to contact Marius Kloft
informally by email for further inquiries. Please state
DR/009/16 in the subject.
