Postdoctoral Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence
Dear Researcher,
This call is for 01 (one) postdoctoral scholarship in Machine Learning funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), within the scope of the Center for Advanced Research (CPA) in Artificial Intelligence Recreating Environments (IARA). The candidate will work full-time at the Center for High-Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence (CCAD-IA - https://www.ccad.ufpa.br/) of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), located on the Guamá campus, in Belém-PA. UFPA is one of the partner institutions of the IARA project.
IARA is one of the 10 (ten) CPAs focusing on Artificial Intelligence in Brazil, supported by FAPESP, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and the Internet Steering Committee in Brazil (CGI.br). CCAD-IA houses the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence applied to Smart Cities (LabCity), where the postdoctoral internship activities will be carried out. LabCity is linked to the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering at UFPA and aims to develop intelligent solutions focused on the context of Smart Cities.
The available position is aligned with the areas of:
● Reasoning and Multimodality in LLMs;
● Automatic Content Generation and Summarization;
● LLMs for Advanced Conversational Systems and Autonomous Agents;
● Automated Machine Learning (AutoML);
● Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) for Critical Urban Decisions.
The researcher should also have an interest in applications aimed at intelligent and sustainable cities, with special emphasis on:
● Health;
● Education;
● Public Governance;
● Environment;
● Urban Mobility.
The candidate must be located in the city of Belém–PA during the postdoctoral period, work exclusively on the proposed activities, and be available for periodic short-term technical trips (every two months) to the city of Canaã dos Carajás, located in the southeast of the state of Pará. Canaã dos Carajás is one of the pilot cities of the IARA project, serving as a testbed for the developed technologies.
Each selected researcher will be funded by FAPESP with a monthly scholarship of R$ 12,000.00 (tax-exempt), equivalent to approximately 2,000 euros, in addition to airfare and installation allowance. It is possible to rent a good apartment in the municipality of Belém for R$ 2,000.00 to R$ 3,000.00 per month. An additional technical reserve is also granted to cover participation in conferences, research visits, purchase of equipment, and other research-related costs.
Each scholarship will have an initial duration of 24 months, which may be extended up to 48 months. Candidates must have completed their doctorate within the last seven years, and the proposed research project must be strongly aligned with IARA's activities (https://fapesp.br/bolsas/pd). In addition to a solid background in computer science, engineering, statistics, and/or mathematics, the desired profiles include:
● Have recent scientific publications (within the last five years) in the areas of machine learning, data science, and data mining, especially in high-impact factor journals and prestigious conferences;
● Experience in other research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) projects with funding agencies and aligned with Artificial Intelligence applied to Smart Cities;
● Excellent knowledge of the English language (written and spoken); knowledge of Portuguese is desirable, but not mandatory;
● Strong command of machine learning, data mining, and/or data science;
● Strong command of languages and tools such as Python and major machine learning libraries and packages;
● Strong ability to work in a team, leadership, and project management;
● Possess computer program registrations with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) applied to the area of smart cities.
Meeting all the above items in the area of interest of the scholarship will strengthen the application.
