Three ML Postdoc positions in Brazil

This call is for three full time Postdoctoral Scholarships in Machine Learning atThe Center of Applied Artificial Intelligence for Smart and Sustainable Cities, Artificial Intelligence Remarking of Urban Environments (IARA), to be hosted at The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, University of São Paulo, ICMC-USP, Campus of São Carlos, Brazil (https://www.icmc.usp.br/en/). USP occupies the position 92 in the 2025 QS University Ranking.

IARA is one of the 10 Brazilian Applied AI Research Centers supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br). ICMC-USP is one of the main Brazilian institutions for Computing, Mathematics and Statistics, with several laboratories working in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

ICMC USP also host another Brazilian Applied AI Research Center and an Emprapii unit (National Innovation funding agency for collaboration with industry) in the area of Data Science, Applied Mathematics and Computing (https://embrapii.org.br/en/).São Carlos has the highest PhD per capita of Latin America, 1 PhD for every 100 inhabitants, the highest rate of startup per capita in Brazil, many of them in Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence, a large number of international researchers and has been ranked, in 2024, as the city with the 3rd best quality of life in Brazil.

These open positions are in:
- Continuous learning for data stream mining and
- Automated machine learning (AutoML)
- Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)

The researcher should also be able to work in smart and suatainable cities applications. Of particular interest are:

- Health
- Environment
- Mobility

Each selected researcher will be funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), receiving an annual scholarship of R$ 12.000,00, tax-free, per month (approximately 2,000.00 Euros) + airplane tickets + (installation support). You can rent a good flat, walking distance to ICMC-USP, for R$ 2,000.00 – 3,000.00 monthly. An extra grant is also provided to cover participation in conferences, research visits, computers, and other research-related costs.

Each position is for 24 months but can be extended up to 48 months. The candidates for these post-doctoral fellowships should have completed their doctoral programs no more than seven years prior to application and the proposed research project should be strongly linked to the work being developed at IARA (https://fapesp.br/en/postdoc). Besides a solid background in computer science, statistics, and mathematics, the desired backgrounds are:

- Good publication record in the area of machine learning, data science and data mining, mainly in machine learning, data science and data mining-related journals with high-impact factors and prestigious conferences;
- Very good knowledge of written and spoken English (Portuguese is not required);
- Strong background knowledge in machine learning, data mining and/or data science;
- Good knowledge of languages and tools, such as Python and main Python Machine Learning Libraries and Packages
- Strong teamwork capacity.

Good recent publications in the area of the scholarship will strengthen the application.
