About ML-Labs: SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning
---
The SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning is an internationally
connected and globally recognised postgraduate research training centre specialising in
Machine Learning and designed to address the urgent industry demand for ML talent.
For the first time the promise of machine learning – software that can automatically
improve with experience – is becoming a commercial reality due to a combination of
the availability of big data, ever increasing computational power, and a clear industry demand.
The result has been an explosion of machine learning applications,
from advertising to healthcare, and an unprecedented demand for machine learning graduates,
both globally and in Ireland. The centre is a significant contribution to this demand,
aiming to train 120 academically outstanding, industry-ready PhD graduates,
with an intake each year between 2019 to 2023. These graduates will be future leaders managing
the disruption that machine learning is causing across industry and society and will strengthen the reputation of Ireland
as a global hub for machine learning education, research, and application.
The centre is a collaboration between University College Dublin (UCD),
Dublin City University (DCU), and the Technological University Dublin (Tu Dublin)
and brings together a team of more than 50 academic supervisors working at the cutting-edge of machine learning
research and its application, as well as a group of 20 Ireland-based companies,
both multinational and SME, that have already partnered with the centre.
