Postdoctoral position at UCLA / NASA
The departments of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences and Chemistry &
Biochemistry at UCLA invites applications for a postdoctoral position
in machine learning focused on landslide susceptibility and processes.
The research project aims at developing Explainable AI algorithms for
landslide susceptibility assessment, based on dozens of different
geophysical factors and remote-sensing images from National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Seulgi Moon and
Louis Bouchard, in collaboration with Gilles Peltzer and Al Handwerger
at UCLA for this project funded by NASA. This postdoc will join the
larger ML community at UCLA, one of the largest and most active
research communities in the world, and benefit from the connections
between UCLA and NASA. There are many collaborative opportunities,
both within our groups as well as across other colleges and
departments (which include faculty working in ML, computer vision,
speech processing and medical imaging).
UCLA is the top public university in the nation, having been ranked #1
seven (7) years in a row by the US News & World Report.
Knowledge, skills and experience:
- Ph.D. degree (or about to obtain one) in geophysics, physics,
engineering, computer science, chemistry, applied mathematics or
related fields. This is a NASA project in geophysics, so a background
in geophysics is better, but not required as long as the candidate is
willing to learn.
- Expertise in AI, ML and/or natural language processing, or
substantial experience and a keen interest in landslide susceptibility
and related processes
- Publications in flagship journals or patents
- Skills in programming and applied mathematics / numerical methods
- Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TF)
- Strong communication, presentation, and writing skills, and
excellent command of English
- OPTIONAL: Skills in parallel / distributed programming & hardware
desirable but not required, experience with MATLAB (some of our codes
are in MATLAB)
Employment conditions:
The salary scale is standard and determined by UC-postdoc collective
bargaining agreement, depends on experience
