🎓 PhD OPPORTUNITY: Call for Candidates in AI & Digital Health – Joan Oró Grants (FI 2026) at MICELAB (University of Girona)

We are looking for highly motivated candidates to apply for a predoctoral contract (formerly FI grants) under the Joan Oró 2026 call, funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

We are the Modeling, Identification and Control Engineering Laboratory (MICELAB) at the University of Girona (UdG). Our team works at the intersection of control engineering, artificial intelligence, and biomedical research, developing models and intelligent systems to better understand and support human health.

Our research has focused on developing advanced technologies for chronic disease management, particularly Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). We specialize in high-complexity algorithms and digital twins designed to predict physiological responses, optimize metabolic control, and evolve next-generation artificial pancreas technologies. Our laboratory maintains strategic alliances with international industry-leading companies and top-tier clinical institutions recognized for excellence in medical research.

If you are looking to start your research career with us at the University of Girona (UdG), this is your chance! 👇

🔬 About the position:

The position is integrated into the high-impact research project: "Synulin AI: Synchronized insulin pen with integrated AI control agents". The project aims to transform diabetes management through a disruptive digital ecosystem focused on personalization and patient empowerment.

Research Framework (Generative AI):

  • High-Fidelity Digital Twins: Research and implementation of deep generative architectures, including GANs (Generative Adversarial Networks), VAEs (Variational Autoencoders), and Physics-Informed models to replicate human physiological behavior with maximum precision.
  • Clinical Data Synthesis: Development of individualized synthetic datasets to simulate complex metabolic scenarios and enhance treatment personalization.
  • Intelligent Agents & LLMs: Design of support systems based on Large Language Models and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) techniques to provide personalized therapeutic coaching and decision support.

📋 What do we offer?

  • Predoctoral Contract: Initial 1-year contract, renewable annually for up to 3 years (or 4 years in specific cases)
  • Full Funding: Covers salary and Social Security costs.
  • Training & Mobility: Supplementary funding included for research stays, conferences, and training activities .
  • Start Date: Expected by September 1, 2026 (or up to December 1 for non-EU candidates requiring visa processing) .

Mandatory Requirements: To apply for this grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Academic Record: Hold a minimum average grade of 6.50 (0-10 scale) in your undergraduate degree.
  2. Degree Completion: You must have completed the studies granting access to the PhD (Bachelor + Master) between January 1, 2023, and the contract start date.
  • (Note: This period may be extended back to Jan 1, 2020, for justified reasons such as maternity/paternity leave, care for dependents, or serious illness ).
  • Completed Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical fields.
  1. PhD Admission: You must be eligible for admission and enrollment in a PhD program for the 2025-2026 academic year.
  2. No previous PhD: You must not hold a PhD title.

We will also take into consideration the following:

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong expertise in Python (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and Matlab, with a focus on generative modeling and time-series analysis.
  • Communication: Fluency in technical English for scientific production and participation in international conferences.

💼 Value Proposition

  • Pre-doctoral Contract (FI): stable research contract under the current regulatory framework.
  • Cutting-edge Infrastructure: Access to high-performance GPU devices and advanced computing servers dedicated to training complex AI models.
  • Real Clinical Impact: Integration into a multidisciplinary consortium where research is validated in top-level clinical settings.
