Regular readers of this list will know that for reasons unknown my
replies to questions stop appearing, and this is apparently reset by
sending a direct message. This will either trigger that, or prove the
list is at least working for non-replies.

For anyone new to the problem, they come from Thunderbird on a static
Unix domain via a fixed mail server that's been running on that name for
over 20 years and there should be nothing "odd" about them. And yes,
I've been on this mailing list from the start on the new server, and a
decade or two before that. It's not a local/user problem.

messages stating "Some messages to you could not be delivered. If
you're seeing this message it means things are back to normal, and
it's merely for your information."

Did the postmasters check if the message got delivered to the mailing
list system and if the message got distributed to the subscribers?

Are you using SPF+DKIM+DMARC? I've read that not having them may cause
problems, but having only SPF records I haven't seen any problems. So
I don't know what not having SPF does.

You have to bear in mind I've been on this list a long time - long
before it was moved to this current mailer even. And my domain name
predates freebsd.org. Yet I have these intermittent phases of having
replies to certain posts here disappear into the ether. it's been looked
at before.

This is the sendmail log of contact with FreeBSD's server:

It's delivered okay, mx1.freebsd.org has handed back it's queue ID. it
just doesn't make it to the list. Unfortunately the only way I can try
to debug it is by sending a message to the list to test it - and these
always get through. There must be something about the message I'm
replying to that causes the problem. I'm always using the same
Thunderbird mailer. Some thread I can reply to, some I can't. The mail
server this end handles thousands of emails a day, and has been there
for years.

If someone with access at the FreeBSD end of things could figure out
what happened to this message ID after it was accepted and queued that
would be wonderful. No one has ever come forward to say they can do it.

According to the tracing headers, SPF for Frank's domain is on
and passes. There's no DKIM or DMARC for that domain.

It would have surprised me had it been a SPF problem, because it seems
Frank's mails make it to the list server (they do not bounce to him),
and that is the only link in the chain where SPF is relevant.

I regularly get the "bouncing messages..." message too. The last two
I received were from freebsd-ports saying 9768 and 9763 had bounced.
I'm used to Microsoft failing to transfer messages, particularly
outgoing and will often include myself in the 'To' field since many of
my Microsoft's send failures will fail to let me email myself too.
Using Thunderbird and leaving it open for longer periods I often need
to do "File>Offline>Work Offline" (downloading for offline doesn't
matter so I skip it) and then repeat but to switch back online. Don't
remember the connection error but switching imap folders starts giving
an error at some point until I do that (or restarting Thunderbird works
too).

That looks like MS is rejecting the message.

This also means that most likely other people that use MS Exchange
Online will not receive the message.

There isn't really much low-hanging fruit here. You could score points with SPF or DKIM on fjl.co.uk. The NEURAL_* tests tend to be very transient (and they cancelled each other out for this message). I'm not sure what knobs we can easily turn for you.

I actually found an allowlist that should work. Let us
(postm...@freebsd.org) know if you notice email is still being blocked
or blackholed.
