Hi,

I am on FreeBSD 12.0-CURRENT (r316508) and am building KDE5 desktop with
area51 ports.

Since KDE5 does not have its own display manager yet, is it possible to
get gdm (the display manager already in use) to start KDE instead of
Gnome. I have gdm_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf.

Thanks for any help.

KDE5's display manager is known as Simple Desktop Display Manager or
sddm. x11/sddm is the port.

I am having trouble remembering if installing the port will by default
launch plasma5-plasma.If it doesn't reply and ill give some more direction.
Also, I suggest adding kde-f...@freebsd.org for kde related topics.

Correction, kde-f...@kde.org is the kde mailing list.

My experiences with gdm (and Gnome in general for that case)
are quite bad: It seems you cannot start anything but Gnome
with gdm, and it does totally ignore .xinitrc and .xsession,
forcing you to get your "autostart" programs configured
manually from within the Gnome session.

Why not temporarily use xdm? It uses .xsession (or .xinitrc,
if you add an "execution cascade") where you can put the
correct command line to start KDE 5. For testing, it's also
possible to use ye olde "startx" command (uses .xinitrc).

I didn't investigate the gdm issue any further, because I
tend to abandon software that heavily disappoints me. ;-)

For *many* years now I always do login on the normal console and run
'startx' to bring up KDE.

Aus "Nie wieder Krieg!" wurde "Nie wieder Krieg ohne Deutschlands Truppen"
The "No wars anymore!" changed now to "No wars anymore without German battle groups!"
El "¡Nunca jamás guerra!" ha cambiado a "¡Nunca jamás guerra sin tropas alemanas!"
