I apologize in advance if there is a thread like this on here. If such a thread exists, please correct me.

My name is Phil and though I do not frequently post on here, I do read it and attempt to keep up.

My reason for creating this is because I feel the situation I find myself in is not unique to just me. As an aspiring cinematographer with an insatiable yearning to constantly learn, grow, and improve my abilities, I find myself stuck between wanting to step out in faith to harness the capabilities of ML...and playing it safe with the OEM firmware of my 5DII.

My hope for this thread is for it to serve souly as a reference to the current/necessary facts a 5DII owner needs to start using ML without unknowingly "bricking" their 5DII.

Yes, all this "can/could" be found through careful searching of the 1000s of posts on here and other sites...but if the goal of ML is to improve and advance (referring only** to the 5D2 version)...users need to have a foundation to start building upon.

So please, take a minute to share the correct and current facts in regard to the 5D Mark II.

As a start please touch on the following:

1. The most current release of ML and the OEM firmware version required.

2. Installation. (there are tutorials easily found on the Wikia page but they only refer, explicitly, to the "officially" released ML versions...example: 60d, 550d...)

3. Current procedures that are for the most part "tried and true."

4. The "OH CRAP" Procedures (example: remove battery)

5. Characteristics that are mainly experimental.

I know reiterating what's already been said (manyyyy times over in some cases) is not a popular suggestion, and for those who oppose such a practice...I ask you to refrain from making waves in this thread.
Let me also say, this thread is not** a thread to discuss or debate one's views. Nor, is this thread one to ask specific (often derailing) questions that may detract from the overall goal.

Lastly, please start your post with the number (currently 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5) that corresponds with your information.

If you're still reading this, thank you for bearing with me, I appreciate your time.

1:For the 5d Mkii, there is not official "stable" build yet, just dev builds. This means any build you use for your 5D Mkii might not be completely stable and you should expect possible bugs. The whole magic lantern firmware comes in a zip file, this contains things like the cropmarks and user manual etc. When small iterations are compiled, they are not released as whole zip files, but simply the core firmware in the form of an autoexec.
You need to goto this page: http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Release_2011Dec22#BONUS  and donate to be able to access the closed beta for the 5d Mkii firmware. Once you have downloaded this, and installed it, simply replace the autoexec with this one (which is the latest dev build)

2. The installation tutorials are still applicable for the Dec22 private beta firmware that you get by donating. Simply copy and paste the autoexec to replace the one downloaded with the dec 22 version so that you are running the bleeding edge version. If i remember rightly, its as simple as putting the files on the card, going to firmware update on your camera and updating to the magic lantern firmware, follow the on screen instructions.

3.Not sure what you mean by this....

4. If you suspect a problem, remove the battery immediately. Turning off the camera will not help, just pop open the battery flap and remove the battery. Do this if the camera ever appears unresponsive when you turn it on. Also, there is a rare bug that causes the battery to drain even when off, so before you get upset and panic that your camera may be dead, try charging the battery.

5. Most of the frame rate, HDR and Highlights++ functions are still very much still being developed. Probably the most stable bits are the display tools such as false colours, histograms, crop marks etc. But as ive already said, you need to remember that it is still in development for the 5d Mkii, so Perhaps dont risk it on a proper shoot. I have found most builds to be stable enough for shoots, but I am used to which bits I know are very stable, or at least which previous builds are stable.

I hope this helps.

Your right all the ML info is spread across the internet just like
crap... It's not the easiest stuff to find. The OP's request was fine.
The time it took to write your not very helpful reply you could have
answered his questions... in 2 minutes flat.

Please keep it respectful people.

I think I will start moderating members who give sarcastic responses to genuine questions.
It's just not that difficult to step up and answer a query instead of putting someone down. No matter how inane it may seem to you

That said, I encourage people to do a little research before asking questions. This especially applies to feature requests.

Finally:
Am I correct in saying that if you were to download the Dec22 unified release, and then the latest 5Dii compatible autoexec.bin.
You would get a working 5Dii install without donating?
I can't try this myself since I don't have a 5Dii. But it's probably worth clearing up the question of whether the days of mandatory donations for 5Dii users are over.

Regards, Morgan.
