Hey folks,

I can't figure out why the video quality of my 50D is not the same quality produced by still pictures. What am I missing?

Thanks,

Neil

The 50D's maximum photo resolution is 4752x3168, 1080p video resolution is 1920x1080.

Don't forget the moire.

And the compression artifacts, too...

adijiwa, that's what I noticed, the moire.

When I convert my still image down to 1920, it is very sharp and nice. I'll capture an example.

The video engine donesn't do a nice bi-cubic scaling of the full sensor data.
As I understand it, it line skips and grabs every few pixels of data.

Oh, that could be why. Are there plans of changing the sharpening/resizing algorithm?

Does 60D suffer from this?

The only one I'm aware of that resizes it down and doesn't simply skip lines/pixels is the new 5D Mark III. So yes, the 60D as well as all the others (5D Mark II, 7D, etc.) have the same issue.

All Canon DSLR cameras suffer from this problem, except the 5Dmk3.

Imagine looking out your window through horizontal blinds, watching someone wearing black and white striped clothing walking by.
One moment they may appear to be wearing completely black, then a second later they might appear completely white, or some ugly jagged diagonal pattern.

This can be controlled with an optical low pass filter (OLPF), effectively reducing the resolution to a level lower than the sampling interval of the sensor (so our friend with the striped clothes would appear to be wearing grey).

A company called Mosaic Engineering sells filters for the 5Dmk2 and 7D, and are also developing products for the 550D/600D and 60D.  These must be inserted into the body of the camera directly over the sensor, if you take still photos with the filter in there the image quality will be reduced.

Are you sure about the 5D Mark III?

The 5D Mark III is considered to have "little or no" aliasing or moire. Especially when compared to other DSLR cameras.

Based on what?

I've never used a mark III so I can't comment from experience, but the reviews I've read suggest big improvements in terms of moire.

"the clear winner is the Canon 5D mkIII which shows virtually no moire"

Thanks. I haven't been following the Mark III very closely since there
is no way at present I could get one if I wanted. Anyway, I just found
this test:

Awesome video Victor! I wish I can afford that model. It's just too expensive.

Even though the 5d mark 3 doesn,t do ine skipping, the camera still
doesn,t produce a full 1080p picture in terms of resolution. It,s more
like 800p, resulting in a softer image than compared to a downsized
picture. several tests shows that even the gh2 produces a sharper
image.

I was interested in GH2 2 years ago. I can't find any sharp GH2 videos in vimeo. Can you please help me?
