Description:
When useing latest firmware with ml 2011 dec 22
Recording goes flawless with the card, after several video's and images the problem occurs write buffer runs full after a coulpe of seconds.

when i format the card ML restores it self nicely and recording goes agian like a dream.

RAW writing is also slower, dunno if its the camera card software or combo.
This was noticed with a Sandisk extreme pro 8gb 45mb/s uhs-1

Did you try doing a low-level format?

I am also curious if anyone has experience between the SanDisk Extreme
30MB/s, 45MB/s, and the SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-1 95MB/s cards? Do
these high speed cards give the 550D/T2i any greater recording
bandwidth, or does the design of the camera and its throughput limit
what speed is of benefit?

Disregard this senior moment...a simple google search answered my
question about the UHS-1 cards, but I'd still like to know if there
would be any benefit between 30MB/s and 45MB/s cards.

Somebody shoot me. All questions answered with a bit of searching.
Next time I'll skip the lazy path and do my work. Moderator, please
delete evidence of my stupidity.

The T2i and T3i do not recognize any of the added benefits of SDHC
UHS-1 cards and from what I read, they may not work at all. SanDisk
Extreme Pro are a waste of time as the T2i and T3i buffers cannot dump
video fast enough to take advantage of 45MB/s write speeds. Under most
circumstances 20MB/s are adequate, 30MB/s is definately more than
enough - that's if the card is really working at that speed.

I have been using some year and a half old Transcend Class 10 cards
and they often cannot keep up, occasionally even after a low level
format, and this as at default bit rate (1.0 CBR). Not sure if these
were authentic Transcends as they were dirt cheap, could they have
been knock-offs? I don't really know.

I do know that before I'm going to shoot video, I always low level
format the cards I'll be using. The reason I have been looking at
faster cards, I'll be going with the SanDisk Extreme 30MB/s cards, is
that I would like to avoid as best I can, the buffer full issue. I've
read here in the forums of some people seeing close to 100Mbit/s
(about 10MB/s) recording speeds, while I've choked on 40Mbit/s (less
than 5MB/s on a card rated for 10MB/s) - but never do I see which SDHC
cards the person is using to get those speeds.

I think it would be helpful if we had a chart illustrating the
performance people were getting with the various brands of memory
cards on the market so we can easily identify what is working best
with our cameras when trying to record at a bit rate of 3.0x with
various ISO settings, as noise seems to effect how my T2i is dealing
with processing and recording.

T2i here.

The differences I noticed between a Transcend class 4 card and a
SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-1 95MB/s.

With regards to images.
The Sandisk has about a 3-4 second buffer recovery time.
The Transcend has about a 12 second buffer recovery time IIRC. It's
long. Feels like forever.

7 images are captured by the buffer with both cards, difference being
the Sandisk's far greater write speed allows quick recovery of the
buffer.

In practice for video, recording with audio.
I get CBR 1.1x on the Transcend (sorry don't recall bitrate)
1 get CBR 1.4x on the Sandisk. About 65MB/s.

Without audio, from memory IIRC, I can get about 70MB/s with the
Transcend, but I've managed peaks of over 100MB/s with an average of
95MB/s with the Sandisk. I'm yet to determine if the card will handle
higher bitrates.
For instance, this 95MB/s was with the camera showing no buffer
activity. Where as, the 65MB/s with sound, shows 1 bar of buffer with
the occasional 2 bar spike.

This is shown by Magic Lantern and by Mediainfo. I've yet to run the
files through a bitrate view to determine the true average bitrate.

The Sandisk will happily shoot at Qscale -16. It's just a matter of
finding the time to find a scene capable of requiring a very large
bitrate to determine what the Sandisk can actually handle.

I also got these results after a few shots and deletions being made on
the card, and with the card having approximately 50 RAW photos and 3
short videos on it.

There is a person here: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=1014311
who appears to be running stock firmware and suffering problems with
videos stopping.

Possibly a similar issue to yours.

I wasn't aware that the T2i wasn't completely compatible with UHS-1
cards, and I have no idea if the 30MB/s or 45MB/s cards are capable of
producing the same results, as I've only got the 2 cards I've listed
above.

But I am very happy with my purchase, as I'm not entirely happy with
the quality of video at Canons default bitrates. But Qscale -16
results are very nice. I'll also have the card when/if I upgrade to a
DSLR capable.
