Hi,
If Magic Lantern made it into the 50D would it be able to provide
video recording?, or is that totally impossible? It has the DIGIC IV,
which as far as I know contains a video encoder chip, doesn't it?
On the other hand, which is the present status of 50D hacking? I've
read the updater was decrypted. Are checksums the problem?

Yours,

Miguel

It needs also h264 encoder which is separate chip so 99% not possible

There was a 400D hack (if I remeber well) which recorded the live view
image. If someone finds a way to run autoexec.bin on 50D, I can try to
reproduce the hack on the 50D, assumming it has a similar liveview
buffer than the 550.

LV buffer is 720 x 480 x 2 bytes in 550D, that means 700k per frame.
30 fps is 700*8*30 = 168 000 Mbps uncompressed, so it doesn't seem
suitable. 10 fps seems more realistic.

Of course, that would be without audio, so it's a hack (I don't see it
as something really useful).

450D? 400D didn't have LiveView yet.

Yes, you are right. Sample video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3HzxbzBpJ8

It was the 40d with the live view hack. I use eos camera movie
recorder http://sourceforge.net/project/eos-movrec/ to record
uncompress avi files straight to my laptop.

Eos-movrec is a very good way to get info about how camera works. With
this program I've found which properties were used to change kelvin
white balance (I've just started eos-movrec, then went to
Debug->draw_prop, then started to change numbers from movrec and wrote
down what I saw on the camera display).

This program uses EDSDK under Windows and libgphoto2 under Linux.

Has anyone ever checked if the chip is actually present in the 50D,
either by opening the body or by software means? I read here:
http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20080922/158348/
http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20090217/165748/
that the DIGIC 4 has h264 encoding capabilities.

Hell!, all other EOS DSLRs with DIGIC 4 record in h264 !
