About CSI Day
===========

6th March 1965 was the day of formation of the Computer Society of
India as a Society. A brief background of the society which has been
mentored and nurtured by several stalwarts down the years is given
here.

The seed for the Computer Society of India (CSI) was first sown in the
year 1965 with a handful of IT enthusiasts who were part of a computer
user group and felt the need to organize their activities across the
country. They also wanted to share their knowledge and exchange ideas
on what they felt were in a fast emerging sector. The purposes of the
Society are scientific and educational, directed towards the
advancement of the theory and practice of computer science and
information technology. Today the CSI takes pride in being the largest
and professionally managed association of and for IT professionals,
academic and student community in India. The organization has grown to
an enviable size of 100,000 strong members consisting of professionals
with varied backgrounds including Software Developers, Scientists,
Project Managers, CIOs , CTOs & IT Vendors to just name a few,
Faculty and Students of CSE & IT streams. It has over 70 chapters all
over the country and serves the academic & student community through
its network of over 500 student branches and around 800 institutional
members. CSI has affiliations with a number of international societies
with similar interest such as IEEE, IEEE CS, ACM, SCS, BCS, CSSL to
name a few. CSI represents India in IFIP – International Federation
for Information Processing, a society that represents IT Societies
from 56 countries/regions, covering five continents with a total
membership of over half a million. CSI also plays a leading role in
SEARCC – South East Asian Regional Computer Confederation, a forum of
national information technology professional societies in the Asia
Pacific region.
