Hey all,

figured we should start a thread with our thoughts on our individual tours and also discuss a time to meet. I am very unfortunately only available to meet if it is either tonight, or tomorrow between 10am and 12. I know that sucks, but you guys can meet without me this week, and we will definitely need to meet after break on either Monday or Tuesday night to do our 5-page write up or at least outline it and assign parts. This week is crazy crazy crazy hectic, but we should be able to handle the 5 pages in the 2 days we return from break.

The Northern Liberties tour was very informational and had lots of walking and stops. there was a disparity in the quality of the food and the actual food we tried. It would be good for local Philly area people who want to explore a new part of the city they are not used to visiting.

I am super UNfree until Wednesday after 10pm. I went on the Decadent Gourmet tour and I have A LOT to say
1. way too much talking for the little amount of food we got. I ended up with like 4 slices of cheese, a few bites of chocolate and some gelato. We stood in Dibruno Bros for literally 40 minutes learning about the elaborate way cheese is made, how bacteria plays a role (ew) etc etc..it was a very "foodie" experience. Like way more detailed explanations about the food than I had anticipated. I did not MIND per se but I feel like this aspect is not explicit in the brochure or website...nor was it heavily in their presentation.
2. My guests on the tour were locals, kind of. From New Jersey, but work nearish to Philly. It was a gift to the woman's husband for his birthday. They seemed to really enjoy it. I got the vibe this tour was for couples, or for tourists...I have no idea why locals would go taste test at naked chocolate when they can just GO to naked chocolate. The main part of this tour was definitely the foodie-ness. The entire family on the tour that I just mentioned was super foodie, like the daughter had gone to culinary school etc.
3. Lots of doing nothing. Lots of sitting around waiting for everyone to be ready to move onto the next eatery.

I did not dislike it...but it was definitely way more explanation-heavy than I had expected. I also would never actually pay 35 dollars to go on the tour. Nor would I pay 70 dollars to take a boyfriend and myself on the tour.

Hey guys,

I couldn't go on a tour because I was out of town this weekend, but I've talked to most of you about your own tours and have gathered a good understanding of what they were like.  I'm also super busy this week but would definitely like to meet up.  I am free Tuesday afternoon, and most of Wednesday including after 10 pm if that's needed.  Can most of you meet Wednesday night?  Ali said she was unfree until 10 pm, so it might end up being 10.  What do you guys think?

I'm going to be in New York during the day, but back for the evening/night.  I'm always out studying until at least 12 or 1, so I would be fine with a late meeting.  Otherwise, I am available Tuesday, but it's not ideal.

I went on Flavors of Philly - just a summary - not too many stops, but definitely tourist-y and kitschy.  The tour wasn't very sleek, but it was at a lower price point.  The people I was with seemed to enjoy it, especially the older couple.  Again, pseudo-locals from NJ.  Definitely more than enough food - I couldn't eat all of it (tomato pie, half a cheesesteak, soft pretzel, chocolate pretzels, and cookie).  This needs to be marketed as a tourist attraction, and it's definitely great for kids (not that much walking, kid-friendly foods)

I am probably free on Wednesday after 10 but can't give a 100% guarantee yet-- let's have a tentative plan for then though.

I had the exact same problem with the tour that I have with the pamphlets-- the highbrow stuff needs to be separated from the lowbrow stuff. It's one thing if you're doing a culinary tour of foods that are Philadelphia-centric, which tend not to be super gourmet, and it's another to have a pasta-making demonstration from an Italian chef. Our tour involved both components, and rather than seeing it as a plus, I just thought the first half of the tour (which was all fried stuff) didn't belong with the second half (which was elegant and would truly satisfy a foodie--as it did me). It seems to me like they need to be more specific about their tours, and draw more distinctions between and within them.

Hey guys,,
this week is suuppppper crazy for me, and wed is actually the worst cuz i have an exam and interview on thursday :( but if that's the only time that works, i'll try my best to make it

For the Northern Liberty tour... i actually really enjoyed it. the biggest plus for me was the fact that it's an area of philly that i wouldve never known about if it wasnt for this... so i feel like we can really market this one to cater to locals.  Also, the guide was very approachable and friendly, very witty. i guess... considering that it's a food tour, the food aspect wasnt the most appealing part of the tour for me. i liked that i could have a taste of a lot of different food but it was literally a tour of the area, focusing on eating different food. (is this clear? if not.. pretty much, im saying that tour >>>> food). Food was still super good though, and i was surprisingly very full at the end. wouldn't have minded paying for the tour to go with friends.

Hey guys,

Should we go ahead for 10 pm tomorrow, seeing that we'll be able to have at least half of us there?  If someone wants to reserve a GSR in Hunstman (I can't), that would work well ... if not, I can look into Van Pelt, or we can always meet in Houston in the SPEC office.

I booked room 268 for 10 PM tonight.  I might have to leave a little early, because I have a midterm tomorrow, but I'll be there at 10.

See you guys there,

Hey guys,

Bad news.  The tour prices are zero percent changeable.  They're more interested in finding if customers feel the tour is a good value.  My contact seemed to be confused by my question, but asked if we had any others.  Apparently, they don't want to change the tours either (surprise).  Sorry that the Q&A wasn't more productive, but let me know if we should direct any more questions their way.

Best,
Shana

So mine is similar but can maybe elaborate on some of emilys points. I will copy and paste my piece into Emily's and combine them because they kind of go hand-in-hand

So Emily and I did super similar things. I guess we both had similar assignments in the sheet we made at our meeting. Anyways, I reorganized Emily's a bit to include the segment names and identifications I created. I think either we can include these segment identifications interspersed throughout the larger paragraph, or have them as their own paragraph. I have attached both the paragraph interspersed into Emily's piece and the paragraph itself for you to look over. The three segments are the New-to-School segment (freshmen), Penn Parent Segment and Philly Veteran segments (seniors). I gave them cute names so we can just refer back to them in a concise way in the future in our write-ups etc.

I personally don't feel like alumni would want to go on a food tour. Like would it be random groups of alumni?

There are lots of different occasions that bring groups of alumni back to philly, and if 10 or 15 of them went on a tour together, I feel like it would be a cool event they may be interested in.
