7. The US Census: What You Need To Know: 2020 will be an important year. Census 2020 will bring federal funding to our schools, roads, housing, and impact our representation in Congress for the next decade. CAIR-SFBA is working to ensure that the Muslim community is fully counted. Some may face barriers to Census completion, so we are taking steps to ensure everyone has access to the assistance they need. What is the Census? Every ten years, since 1790, the Census Bureau counts everyone living in the country, to collect basic information including: age, sex, and race, for every adult, child and baby in every household. Census 2020 will not ask about citizenship status or for information like a social security number. Starting March, everyone will be asked to complete the 2020 census online, by phone, or by mail. Questionnaire Assistance Centers will be located throughout the community, providing the public with access to computers and support in completing the Census. Responses are confidential, and strictly protected by law. We are counting on you to be counted, and we will continue to provide you with Census 2020 information and updates. Get Involved with the Census: Volunteer as Part of CAIR SFBA's 2020 Team of Civic Engagement Champions! Our first ever Civic Engagement Champions (CEC) volunteer group will play a crucial role in ensuring our community is informed about and engaged in the 2020 Census and Elections. Together, several dozen committed individuals will reach thousands of groups and individuals in their respective cities and regions. With our community's political voice at stake in a historic election year, this is a unique opportunity to serve your local community through being an ambassador of CAIR-SFBA! https://ca.cair.com/sfba/volunteer/civic-engagement-champions-volunteer-application/

9. Nihonmachi Outreach Committee (NOC) Presents: 40th Anniversary San Jose Day of Remembrance NO CAMPS, NO CAGES 40 YEARS OF FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE Commemorating the 78th Anniversary of E.O. 9066 - February 19, 1942. Featuring the Hon. Norman Mineta, performance of Swingposium by Japantown’s own San Jose Taiko and Wesley Jazz Ensemble, and candlelight procession is Sunday, February 16, 2020 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin 640 North Fifth Street, San Jose, CA Free and open to the public Seating is limited. The 40th Anniversary San Jose Day of Remembrance event commemorates the anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066. The order, signed on February 19, 1942, led to the forced removal and incarceration of 120,000 people of Japanese descent during World War II. Hundreds of people will gather together at this annual event not only to remember that great civil liberties tragedy but also to reflect on the rising tensions that are building within our communities today. The 2020 San Jose Day of Remembrance event will feature the return of Japantown's native son, the Honorable Norman Y. Mineta to the program and will be kicked off with a special music and dance collaboration from San Jose Taiko and the Wesley Jazz Ensemble. The 2020 event carries the theme "No Camps, No Cages." During the past few years, the story of Japanese American incarceration has intersected with several national stories including Justice Sonia Sotomayor's scathing dissent in Trump v. Hawaii to migrant detention centers. Last June, community activists, including former Japanese American incarcerees, gathered in front of the gates of Fort Sill, Oklahoma to protest the Trump administration's plan to move 1,400 migrant children to this site. During World II, Fort. Sill imprisoned approximately 700 Japanese American men. Many prominent Americans, including former first lady, Laura Bush, and actor George Takei, drew stark parallels between Japanese American wartime incarceration and the "zero-tolerance" border policy. "I cannot for a moment imagine what my childhood would have been like had I been thrown into a camp without my parents. That this is happening today fills me with both rage and grief: rage toward a failed political leadership who appear to have lost even their most basic humanity, and a profound grief for the families affected."-- George Takei. Feature Speaker: Norman Y. Mineta: San Jose native son, Norman Mineta, has had a remarkable journey from his childhood growing up in San Jose Japantown; to imprisonment in the Heart Mountain Japanese American concentration camp; to representing his community in San Jose City Hall and the halls of Congress; to serving in two presidential cabinets. Throughout his career, Mineta blazed many trails as he dedicated his life to public service. Mineta served as the 14th Secretary of Transportation during a critical period of time in our nation's history. During the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, he gave the order to ground all civilian aircraft. In the aftermath of the attacks, Mineta made decisions regarding airport security and the creation of the Transportation Security Administration. Mineta's incarceration during World War II influenced some of the administration's decisions on national security. "I wanted to make sure that as we were rebuilding our new security regimen... that there was no ethnic and religious profiling." Mineta recalled President George W. Bush telling his congressional leadership, "We don't want to have happened to people today what happened to Norm in 1942." Special Performance: "Swingposium" San Jose Taiko & Wesley Jazz Ensemble: San Jose Taiko and the Wesley Jazz Ensemble will have a special performance from 5:00 to 5:30 that will launch into the traditional Day of Remembrance program. "Swingposium" combines the pulsating beats of the taiko drum with the exuberant energy of swing music and dance. Seating is limited. Remembrance Speaker: Dr. Amy Iwasaki Mass: Dr. Amy Iwasaki Mass is Professor Emerita at Whittier College, where she taught for 25 years. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, except for the years she was incarcerated with her family in the Heart Mountain, Wyoming concentration camp. Dr. Mass has made numerous presentations and published many articles about the psychological impact of the concentration camp experience on Japanese Americans. She continues to speak at Day of Remembrance events, at universities and she recently appeared in a film about her powerful 1981 testimony before the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC). Dr. Mass has been a social worker for 60 years and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including a Fulbright Teaching Award, Irvine Foundation Grant, Institute of American Cultures Fellowship, and Phi Beta Kappa from U.C. Berkeley, where she received her B.A. She also holds a Master of Social Work from USC and a Doctorate in Social Welfare from UCLA.

13. Assalamu Alaikum Friends and Community Members, I am pleased to share that CAIR California's 9th Annual Muslim Day at the Capitol (MDAC) will insha'Allah be taking place on Monday, June 8. MDAC is the state's largest Muslim civic engagement event of the year. At a time when our rights and civil liberties are under attack, it is crucial we defend our rights by getting involved in legislative advocacy. Last year, your advocacy efforts at MDAC led to the passage of the California Act to Save Lives (AB 392) which significantly limits when police officers can use deadly force. We also advocated for adding Ethnic Studies into high school requirement (AB 331) and restoring the voting rights to people on parole (ACA 6). Join us for a full day of leadership training, advocacy, and empowerment. Students, families, and community members from throughout the state are encouraged to attend. Mark your calendars now for Monday, June 8, and look out for future updates as to when registration opens. Sincerely, Courtney Mangus, CAIR-SFBA, Programs Coordinator
