8.     The US Census: What You Need To Know: 2020 will be an important year. Census 2020 will bring federal funding to our schools, roads, housing, and impact our representation in Congress for the next decade. CAIR-SFBA is working to ensure that the Muslim community is fully counted. Some may face barriers to Census completion, so we are taking steps to ensure everyone has access to the assistance they need. What is the Census? Every ten years, since 1790, the Census Bureau counts everyone living in the country, to collect basic information including: age, sex, and race, for every adult, child and baby in every household. Census 2020 will not ask about citizenship status or for information like a social security number. Starting March, everyone will be asked to complete the 2020 census online, by phone, or by mail. Questionnaire Assistance Centers will be located throughout the community, providing the public with access to computers and support in completing the Census. Responses are confidential, and strictly protected by law. We are counting on you to be counted, and we will continue to provide you with Census 2020 information and updates. Get Involved with the Census: Volunteer as Part of CAIR SFBA's 2020 Team of Civic Engagement Champions! Our first ever Civic Engagement Champions (CEC) volunteer group will play a crucial role in ensuring our community is informed about and engaged in the 2020 Census and Elections. Together, several dozen committed individuals will reach thousands of groups and individuals in their respective cities and regions. With our community's political voice at stake in a historic election year, this is a unique opportunity to serve your local community through being an ambassador of CAIR-SFBA! https://ca.cair.com/sfba/volunteer/civic-engagement-champions-volunteer-application/

14.  Assalamu Alaikum Friends and Community Members, I am pleased to share that CAIR California's 9th Annual Muslim Day at the Capitol (MDAC) will insha'Allah be taking place on Monday, June 8. MDAC is the state's largest Muslim civic engagement event of the year. At a time when our rights and civil liberties are under attack, it is crucial we defend our rights by getting involved in legislative advocacy. Last year, your advocacy efforts at MDAC led to the passage of the California Act to Save Lives (AB 392) which significantly limits when police officers can use deadly force. We also advocated for adding Ethnic Studies into high school requirement (AB 331) and restoring the voting rights to people on parole (ACA 6). Join us for a full day of leadership training, advocacy, and empowerment. Students, families, and community members from throughout the state are encouraged to attend. Mark your calendars now for Monday, June 8, and look out for future updates as to when registration opens. Sincerely, Courtney Mangus, CAIR-SFBA, Programs Coordinator
