Dear Kabir Bhai,
As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum.
You asked me recently about the Qur’anic verses that mention about the five daily prayers (Salah). The three verses of the holy Qur'an that mention the 5 daily prayers with indication of the general timings of these prayers during the day and night are mentioned below: (2:238 - ‘Asr prayer), (11:114 - Fajr, Magrib and Isha prayers) and (17:78 - Duhr prayer). I have also included three additional verses of the holy Qur’an that mention about the Jumah prayer (62:9-10), the Wadu/Tayammum (5:6), and Direction of prayers (2:149). There are of course many Hadith and Traditions of Prophet Muhammad (saw) regarding the five daily prayers that are in more details, including the Shab-i-M'iraaj trip, which I have not included here in this short e-mail. You can actually find these Qur’anic references and various Hadith references by Google search (with verification), which is what I did to get these Qur’anic references quicker. I am posting my response to your question in public forums so that some others can also see these important information.
Anyway, here are the references of the Qur’anic verses on Prayers (Salah), the Wadu/Tayammum and the Direction of Prayers:
‘Asr Prayer (2:238):
[2:238] “Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers, especially the Middle Prayer; and stand before Allah in a devout (frame of mind)
Fajr, Magrib and Isha prayers (11:114):
[11:114] You shall observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) at both ends of the day, and during the night. The righteous works wipe out the evil works. This is a reminder for those who would take heed.
Duhr prayer (17:78):
[17:78] You shall observe the Contact Prayer (salat) when the sun declines from its highest point at noon, as it moves towards sunset. You shall also observe (the recitation of) the Quran at dawn. (Reciting) the Quran at dawn is witnessed.
Jum’ah prayer (62:9-10):
[62:9-10] “O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): That is best for you if ye but knew! (9) – And when the Prayer is finished, then may ye disperse through the land, and seek of the Bounty of Allah: and celebrate the Praises of Allah often (and without stint): that ye may prosper. (10)”
Wadu/Tayammum (5:6):
[5:6] O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.
Direction of prayers (2:149):
[2:149] “From whencesoever Thou startest forth, turn Thy face in the direction of the sacred Mosque; that is indeed the truth from the Lord. And Allah is not unmindful of what ye do.”
