I have a Merchant 4.x developer licence, that came when I [bought!] the
compiler but I've never bothered to upgrade to 5.x
After years of non-merchant scripting I now have someone who needs a
storefront, and I'm reasonably familiar with Merchant 4.x.
The hosting provider can offer either 4.x or 5.x hosting for the same
price.
Are there any significant advantages or disadvantages in going with one
version or other?
I've beaten the stuffing out of mmui.mv for version 4.x experimenting,
and I can roll my own modules if I need to.
If 5.x is significantly better than 4.x I'm prepared to give it a go,
but if I'm better to stick with the devil I know, (and have a developer
licence for) I'll go 4.x
4.x offers easy offline db manipulation due to the xbase format, but
I'm also aware it's slower than mySQL.
This isn't going to be a huge site, maybe 100 products max, but I do
need to be able to provide fairly streamlined offline and online db
integration with the offline db being a Microsoft Access application.
