Looking for simple DB example code

Hello all
I am new to MIVA and MIVA Scripting. I am looking for a simple
example on how to connect to a database. I have a store with the
following release:

Production Release 3
MIVA Engine v5.06
Database API: mivasql

How do I open the table to get a list of the categories for my store?
Some type of "select (*) from <<category tablename>>"?

Scan the examples, and just replace the various forms of 'count' with
