MySQL mysql_stmt_fetch: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

Has anybody had experience with this error on time consuming processes:

mysql_stmt_fetch: Lost connection to MySQL server during query

From what I can tell, Miva is telling MySQL how long to keep the
connection open during a query, but when the query loops it times out,
drops the connection, and terminates the script. Any way around this?
