Chandra Sekhar, Assistant Professor, Department of MCA and D.Chinnakullai Reddy, Assistant Professor, Department of EEE attended a 3 day Workshop on “Contemporary issues in Accreditation of Engineering Programs “held on May 19th to May 21st at NIAS Auditorium, IISc Campus Organised by EDUMATIC SOLUTIONS, Bangalore.

Report by K. Chandra Sekhar, Assistant Professor, Department of MCA
Accreditation is Formal recognition of the quality of an educational program / Institution by an external - independent agency on the basis of impartial assessment on the basis of well-defined criteria. Institutional Accreditation is an evaluation of overall institutional quality, but it does not focus on individual academic programmes. Programme Accreditation is an evaluation of a specific academic programme of study, rather than an institution as a whole. Institutional accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body established by the UGC in 1994. Technical Programmes is a totally independent body –National Board of Accreditation (NBA)- Diploma level to Post Graduate level in Engineering and Technology, Management.
The purpose of this training workshop was to provide an overview of quality assurance, accreditation, and recognition schemes in the contemporary higher education landscape. The goals were to provide participants with an overview of quality assurance, accreditation, and institutional effectiveness through a series of presentations, panels, and breakout sessions, and to suggest tools and resources suitable to the higher education sector’s capacity development efforts. Conference sessions featured expert trainers on quality assurance and accreditation
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Accreditation of engineering programs is gaining in importance world-wide as a means of quality assurance. NBA accreditation has been made mandatory for engineering programs recently.ln order to align with global accreditation systems, NBA has applied for permanent signatory status in Washington Accord , which requires substantial equivalence of accreditation systems and processes among the signatories. The twin goals of Washington Accord are to promote Mobility and Benchmarking. The major requirement, in this context, is for the engineering programs to show evidence of Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL) through the prescription of specific Graduate Attributes.
TOPICS COVERED
ü Quality Assurance in Engineering Education
ü Current NBA processes
ü ABET processes
ü Washington Accord
ü Preparation of Self-Assessment reports
ü Preparing for Accreditation Rankings and Benchmarking
OBJECTIVES
1) The objectives of this workshop are provide a comprehensive training on outcome based in education and also to train master trainers and evaluators for further NBA Accreditation process. 2) To explain the features of new outcome based accreditation process and parameters. 3) Provide opportunity to interact and share the latest developments in outcome based accreditation process. 4) To train the future stake holders for the preparation of self-assessment report
Upon successful completion of Training the participants would be
ü Able to distinguish PEOs and POs
ü Able to identify, design and apply appropriate assessment methods for PEOs, POs and COsa
ü Able to establish correlation among PEOs POs Gas and Cos
ü Able to recognize the contribution of c o-curricular/extra-curricular activities in the attainment of POs
ü Able to analyse the effectiveness of the indirect assessment methods / rubric used to measure PEOs, POs and COs
ü Able to identify the scope for continuous improvement and to propose corrective measures
ü Able to correlate the Programme Specific Criteria with Programme Curriculum and Faculty competency
ü Able to assess all the criteria in the NBA’s SAR
OUTCOMES
• Clear understanding of: Quality and Quality Assurance in Engineering Education; Accreditation; NBA Accreditation; ABET Accreditation; Rankings; and Benchmarking • Capacity to prepare for NBA accreditation • Comprehend the need and benefits of Accreditation

Topic : Teaching and Learning Process and curriculum design for outcome based learning
He started his session by Asking Questions on
Ø What is Knowledge Acquisition?
Ø How is it used various Applications?
Ø Why and where to use this Knowledge?
And then he moved to discuss Curriculum, in this he talked How to build Curriculum,
He stressed that the curriculum design must be
ü Beyond the Course,
ü Balance,
ü Flexible,
ü Holistic,
ü Activity Based and
ü Innovation Oriented.
After that he compared the Present day happening in engineering, current scenarios.
OVERALL METHODOLOGY
In his talk he stressed on the following points:
Ø The curriculum has to become purposeful and relevant and hence the design needs a full
Ø Anticipation by faculty.
Ø The curriculum is dynamic – changes once in a few years.
Ø Faculty play a major role.
Ø They should take the responsibility and ownership to generate a holistic, balanced, flexible curriculum taking into account the constraints in their institution
Day 2 Session 2:

Topic : SAR (Self-Assessment Report ) Preparation
Ø He explained the Importance of SAR during the NBA Evaluation Process.
Ø He started the major objective of preparing SAR is to identifying gaps and preparing an appropriate action plan to ensure preparedness.
Ø Once SAR Preparation is over , it Provides preparedness status of the I/P for the upcoming NBA visit
Ø He explained that, it Provides written evidences which the evaluation team maps/matches with the visual/oral evidences during the visit .
Ø During the discussion, he stressed the Importance of Institutions VISION, MISSION, PEO’s and Pos.
Ø He has given various Prestigious Institutions Sample Vision and Missions like IITs across India, and some Private Universities like Dhirubai Ambani DAIICT.
Ø He told that every department also must have their own Vision and Mission.
Ø The important thing during preparation of Vision and Mission is IT MUST BE REALISTIC.
Ø The concern department and Vision and Mission must by Synergic with the Institutions Vision and Mission.
Ø He explained that the Departments Vision and Mission can be updated in future in a Particular Interval of times, but the updated ones also synergic with Institutions vision and mission.
Ø He explained the situation when this change will happen, by taking the feedback form the Stakeholders, if required vision and mission can be updatable. He explained the same thing through flowchart diagram.
